FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

EDUC 2110 PowerPoint

Q: What are the requirements for admission into Teacher Education?

A. Click for information on requirements for Admission to Teacher Education.

Q: When should I declare my major?

A: You should declare your major as soon as possible. You may declare your major in TEAC or contact the departments of the individual programs. The major will be recorded as "interest" until you are formally admitted into the teacher education program.

Q: Who is my advisor?

A: The Impey Teacher Education Advisement Center (TEAC) advises Education Undeclaredstudents and Early Childhood Education (P-5), Middle Grades Education (4-8), and History Education (6-12) majors prior to their admission into the teacher education program. Once students are admitted to the major in teacher education, they are assigned an advisor in that department. Students pursuing degrees in other education majors should contact the departments directly for advisement. Click for a list of Program Area Coordinators.

Q: Why do I need to know my "matriculation date"?

A: Certain requirements in the teacher education program are determined by a student's matriculation date.

Q: Do I need to complete all of my general education classes before I can be admitted to a teacher education program?

A: No, you do not need to complete all of your general education classes prior to admission into a teacher education program. Beginning Fall 2008, specific classes required for admission to teacher education are ENGL 1101, ENGL 1102, and EDUC 2110* (or EDUC 2201), and may be included in the 45 hours of college credit required for admission.

Q: Do I need to complete all my general education requirements before beginning my major classes?

A: No, you should meet with your advisor to determine appropriate courses in the major that you should begin taking in order to complete required sequences for the degree program.

Q: When should I take EDUC 2110** ?

A: You may take EDUC 2110 as soon as you have completed ENGL 1102. EDUC 2110 has an intensive field experience and participation in an appropriate school setting, and is not offered during the summer terms.

**Please see the Office of Field Experiences if you completed an approved Teacher Cadet or Teacher Apprenticeship Program.

Q: How can I get credit for a course that I took at another institution that I think may be similar to a particular KSU course, but the KSU Registrar assigned elective credit?

A: You should bring your advisor a copy of the course description from the catalog from your previous institution in the year you completed the course. You can generally request this information from your previous school's Registrar if you no longer have the appropriate catalog.

Q: Where do I find information about the GACE basic skills assessment?

A: For information on certification tests in the state of Georgia, click here to learn more about the transition from Praxis testing to GACE testing. You may be exempt from GACE basic skills assessment by SAT scores of at least 1000 (verbal and math), ACT scores of at least 43 (English and math), or GRE scores of at least 1030 (verbal and quantitative)*. Check with the certification officer at 770-423-6043 for exemption scores if you took the SAT prior to April 1, 1995, or ACT prior to 1989. *Please see the Georgia Professional Standards Commission website PSC's web page on the GACE Basic Skills Assessment for additional exemption options.

Q: When should I apply to the Teacher Education Program?

A: You should apply to the teacher education program by the appropriate deadlines even though you may not have completed all the requirements for admission at the time of application. For example, for Spring 2009 admission to teacher education, you should apply by September 15, 2008, if you anticipate completing all the requirements for admission by the end of the Fall 2008 semester. Applications are available on the information wall outside TEAC or you can download one from the TEAC web site. Your advisor in the program into which you are applying must sign the application.

Q. What can I do if I do not meet the KSU AGPA requirement of 2.75 or greater for admission into the Teacher Education program?

A: You should meet with an advisor in your degree program to determine appropriate courses to improve your AGPA.

Please note: If you have earned grades of D, F, or WF in a KSU course and have repeated that same course at KSU with a grade of C or higher, you may be eligible for an adjusted GPA. You must complete the Repeated Course Form and submit it to the Office of the Registrar.

Q: What can I do if my cumulative GPA in courses in general education and lower division major that were accepted for transfer credit by the KSU Registrar [Education Transfer GPA] is below the 2.75 required for admission to teacher education?

A: You should meet with an advisor in your degree program to determine appropriate courses to improve your Education Transfer GPA. Please note: The Education Transfer GPA is calculated separately from the KSU AGPA and KSU Cumulative GPA. Please see your advisor for questions concerning the Education Transfer GPA.
