RIGHT TO KNOW

The Public Employee Hazardous Chemical Protection and Right to Know Act of 1988 was enacted by the State of Georgia to ensure worker protection from hazardous chemicals that may be encountered in the workplace. See the Department of Labor RTK poster for additional information. As required by this law, Kennesaw State University has developed a policy and plan to assure that all employees receive training and information about hazardous chemicals present in their work areas. As required by this law, Kennesaw State University has developed a policy and plan to assure that all employees receive training and information about hazardous chemicals present in their work areas. A copy of this plan is available through your department or by contacting the Kennesaw State University’s Right to Know Coordinator at the Environmental Health and Safety department, ext. 2415. Under the plan, there are two training requirements.

1. Basic Right To Know Training Prior to starting work, every KSU employee must receive basic training, which provides general information about the Right to Know Act and its provisions. The University offers this basic training to all employees during their new employee orientation using a video format.

2. Online Chemical-Specific (RTK ) Right To Know Training is available for those who work in  Biology & Chemical laboratories.  The University of Georgia has granted us permission to their on line training.   It is your responsibility to make a copy of your training certificate when you complete the on-line training and
keep it in your personal records for proof of training.

CHEMATIX™ at Kennesaw State University

Policy - Chemical Inventories at (KSU) Kennesaw State University

It is the responsibility of the Kennesaw State University to provide employees with a safe and healthful work environment and to comply with all applicable State and Federal regulations. In order to comply with the Georgia Public Employees Hazardous Chemical Protection and Right to Know Rules, (KSU) selected CHEMATIX™ as its chemical management system to safely and easily procure, manage and inventory chemicals.

Inventory Reconciliation Requirement

Georgia law requires chemical inventories to be physically reconciled twice each year and submitted in June and December. The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia therefore requires Kennesaw State University to submit a consolidated chemical inventory in June and December of each year. CHEMATIX™ is the tool (KSU) uses to consolidate and submit those inventories. CHEMATIX™ streamlines the reconciliation process through the use of handheld barcode scanners and barcode labels attached to each chemical container. Additional guidance on the inventory reconciliation process is listed.

Annual Inventory Procedures

Although inventories in CHEMATIX™ should be up-to-date at all times, it will still be necessary to reconcile inventories within six months of June 1 and December 1 because of the Right To Know law. However, since CHEMATIX™ allows the use of a bar code scanner, it will take less time than in the past.

Items that do not have to be tracked in CHEMATIX™ are: Lab supplies, mixtures made up from chemicals already in the lab inventory (especially working solutions for work in process) and Petri dishes of agar awaiting use.

Becoming a CHEMATIX™ User

Before you can start using CHEMATIX™ you must be added to a specific lab or other chemical storage location by an appropriate person. The following people may be able to assist you in becoming a CHEMATIX™ user:

  • Your Lab Supervisor (or Area Maintenance Manager for Facilities employees only)
  • The CHEMATIX™ Administrator for your Department
  • The Chematix Administrator for EHS [Send email to lsaunde9@kennesaw.edu].
CHEMATIX™ Training Resources
  • Frequently Asked Questions /Answers Guide  (In progress)

  •  CHEMATIX™ Help Desk Phone 6999:  On each CHEMATIX™ screen, there is a HELP button in the upper right hand corner. Each help screen is tailored to the CHEMATIX™ screen you are working on so when reporting a problem to the help desk please reference the screen page.
Training Version of Chematix

Many people have learned how to use simply practicing in the Test/Training version of CHEMATIX™ at http://chematix-test.kennesaw.edu/Chematix/ and by using the HELP screens. The Test/Training version is a risk-free way to learn CHEMATIX™ because it does not impact your inventory or other data in the production version of CHEMATIX™.
