Who We Are


Dr. Carol Harrell
Prof. of English Education
Director of Undergraduate
English Education

After twenty-plus years as a middle and high school English and Reading Teacher and three years as a college professor, Dr. Harrell came to KSU in 1996. She is the principal director of a $1,300,000.00 “Gear Up" grant funded by a federal block grant and is the Book Review Editor for SIGNAL Journal. Her primary research interest is the connection between school and work.

Dr. Kirby joined the KSU English Education faculty in fall 2005 after nine years as a high school English teacher and several years as a college professor. She is the co-author of Inside Out: Strategies for Teaching Writing, Third Edition (2004) and New Directions in Teaching Writing: Memoir (2007), both with Heinemann Publishers. She is also the co-editor of SIGNAL Journal. Her primary research interests are the application of best practices and theory to teaching writing and connections between literature and writing processes.

Dr. Darren Crovitz

Dr. Crovitz joined the KSU English Education faculty in fall 2005. He brought with him eight years of teaching experience, including two years as a Peace Corps volunteer in Latvia. He is the assistant editor of SIGNAL Journal, and his academic interests include writing instruction and assessment, film and teaching, and instructional technology. His primary research interest is the development of critical thinking in students.
Dr. Mason joined the KSU English Education faculty in fall 2006 following several years teaching middle school English and reading in Kansas City, Kansas. She seeks out opportunities to connect her teaching, scholarly work, and service and has published her research on second language acquisition, cooperative learning, and the teaching of writing. Currently, her primary research interest is students’ articulations and perceptions of their unique composing processes.

Dr. Aaron Levy
Asst. Prof. of English Education

After five years as a high school English and Drama teacher, Dr. Levy joined the KSU English Education faculty in fall 2004. He is a published playwright and is currently writing his first young adult novel. His primary research interest is helping young writers reclaim their voices as writers and story tellers.

Dr. Dail joined the KSU English Education faculty in fall 2006 following four years as a middle and high school English teacher and three years as a college professor. She enjoys working with teachers and students in an effort to connect her scholarly work and teaching to current classroom practices. Her recent publications are in the area of young adult literature and focus on engaging students with texts and teachers’ uses in classroom instruction. Her current research focuses on using digital mediums to promote reflectivity in pre-service teachers.
