CALL FOR MANUSCRIPTS
SIGNAL Journal is a peer-reviewed (refereed) journal of the Special Interest Group on Literature for Adolescents, a network of the International Reading Association. The journal publishes articles, essays and reviews about varying aspects of young adult literature. Ideas for using young adult literature in the classroom, ways to get students interested in reading, interviews with young adult authors, critical analyses of several works by one author, thematic comparisons of books by different authors, and topical bibliographies are examples of the types of articles SIGNAL Journal publishes.
FALL ISSUE 2005
Theme: No Girl Left Behind: Helping Girls Find Themselves in Adolescent Literature - Deadline: September 15, 2005
In classrooms filled with the voices of "old, dead, white guys," adolescent girls too often fail to encounter characters they can identify with. In the belief that there is a book for everyone, what are some of the best books and strategies for helping girls find themselves in adolescent literature? What themes and /or stories interest girls? How are girls reinventing themselves in story and in the real world?
SPRING ISSUE 2006
Theme: Science Fiction/Fantasy- Deadline: March 15, 2006
We invite you to submit articles, essays, or reviews for the Spring 2006 issue, which will focus on "Science Fiction and Fantasy." Science fiction and fantasy has the potential to transport readers to times and places that are both unique and familiar at the same time. Why does this genre appeal to adolescent readers? Which new titles are attracting attention? Can science fiction and fantasy appeal to a culturally diverse audience? What role do companion books play in the understanding of popular science fiction and fantasy such as Harry Potter ? How do movie versions of popular books enhance or diminish the reading experience such as with The Lord of the Rings ? How does science fiction and fantasy imagine the future and re-imagine the past? How does the genre encourage readers to examine tough topics such as bigotry, alienation, and freedom? How can we include more science fiction and fantasy in our classrooms?
