Brief Introduction to the Department

The Department of English offers the required writing and literature courses and the specialized courses leading to the degrees of Bachelor of Arts in English, Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education with major in English Education, and Master of Arts in Professional Writing. The courses of the Core Curriculum emphasize college writing and the cultural analysis of world literature. The courses leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree emphasize the literature and cultures of Britain and the Americas, literary and social criticism, and professional and creative writing. The English Education program is similarly constructed and qualifies students for employment in public schools. In addition to formal courses, the Department offers cooperative study and internship programs which provide opportunity for work experience. Bachelor's degrees will prepare student for employment or admission to professional graduate schools. The courses leading to the Master of Arts in Professional Writing offer specialized instruction in several disciplines of applied writing, creative writing, and composition and rhetoric.

The Department's courses in literature, language, and writing provide a solid base of general knowledge which is beneficial for informed citizenship, but which also supports further study in professional or graduate schools on a broad range of careers in public school or college teaching, communication, publishing, business, and other related occupations. The faculty of the Department of English is dedicated to teaching and is actively engaged in research, scholarly activity, and community and public service. The faculty members have studied at leading educational institutions in this country and abroad.
