Kennesaw State University invites applications for the position of Research Director for its new Center for Sustainable Journalism. The Center is funded in part by a pledge from The Harnisch Foundation of $1.5 million spread over a five-year period to advance research aimed at discovering innovative ways to produce financially sustainable, high quality and ethically sound journalism. The Research Director will have a demonstrated and continuing applied research agenda that provides scholars, students, citizens, entrepreneurs, and professionals a well grounded understanding of what is needed to advance financially sustainable, high quality and ethically sound journalism. The Research Director will report to Leonard Witt, Executive Director of the Center, and work closely with the Center’s Director, its Business Development Officer and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences’ development officer and its grant writing specialist. The Center aims to be an internationally recognized hub for research and development of business models that will provide sustainable journalism in the future. An entrepreneurial spirit is welcome.
This is a 9-month, research oriented full-time tenure track faculty position with a 1/1 course teaching load in the Department of Communication. The Research Director for The Center for Sustainable Journalism at Kennesaw State University assumes responsibility for the following:
- developing and implementing research policies, and helping shape the research priorities for the Center.
- providing strategic research leadership for the Center.
- applying for research grants or securing contracts that advance the Center’s mission.
- overseeing research budgets and research grant reporting.
- advocating for funding at the local, state, and national levels for the Center.
- producing applied research in keeping with the Center’s mission.
- developing collaborative relationships with internal and external partners for commercialization and technology transfer of research-developed products especially those advancing financially sustainable, high quality and ethically sound journalism.
- promoting excellence in graduate teaching, research/creative
- partnering with the KSU Foundation to increase private support for research and graduate programs related to the Center’s mission.
- overseeing and ensuring the development and implementation of sound educational planning, policies, procedures and standards for graduate program related to the Center’s mission
- guiding strategic planning for the Center’s research and graduate programs.
- overseeing the recruitment, evaluation, and promotion of all research oriented personnel reporting to The Research Director for The Center for Sustainable Journalism at Kennesaw State University.
- developing systemic structures to recruit, retain and promote diverse graduate students, staff, and faculty who might work on the Center’s research related projects
- promoting the Center’s research accomplishments and advocating for the Center to both internal and external constituents.
The successful candidate is expected to have the following:
- an earned doctorate in an academic discipline related to the Center’s mission.
- accomplishments and achievements in teaching, research/creative activity, and service that qualify at the rank of assistant or associate professor.
- effective interpersonal, communication, and team building skills.
- significant leadership and experience in research, administration, and teaching in graduate programs.
- evidence of success in grant procurement, contracts and other forms of resource acquisition.
- an understanding of, and experience with, issues that influence journalism sustainability.
- a commitment to addressing journalism challenges in the profession, in communities and in higher education.
- a documented understanding of how disruptive technologies are affecting old sustainable media models and how those technologies might be used to advance high quality, ethically sound journalism in the future.
- skilled fiscal management and oversight, and experience in developing, managing, and justifying research oriented budgets.
The successful candidate is expected to demonstrate a commitment to honoring and advancing diversity and collaboration.
