Mission Statement: Foreign Language Education
The purpose of the P-12 program in foreign language education is to prepare caring, knowledgeable,
reflective practitioners who demonstrate proficiency in the target language, in current theories of
human development, in learning strategies and in second language acquisition. In addition, pre-service
practitioners will be versed in various approaches to teaching foreign and/or second languages,
including the appropriate use of technology to enhance instruction.
The program is based upon the conviction that without a theoretical base there is no truly effective
practice. Pre-service teachers will enroll in courses in the history, civilization, culture, literature,
and grammar as well as field work and professional education grounded in the National Standards for Foreign
Languages (the 5 Cs) to enable them to teach at all grade levels across the P-12 spectrum.
Teacher Certification in Foreign Languages is provided through
the B.A.
major in Modern Language & Culture with a concentration
in teacher certification in either French or Spanish:
This concentration allows degree candidates to complement their studies
in the primary language with the coursework required for teacher certification.
The curriculum in Concentration II satisfies requirements of both
the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE)
and the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (PSC) as it is identical
with the previously designed curriculum and has approval of the Kennesaw
State University Teacher Education Council.
A foreign language education program provides students with a broad
foundation in general education, foreign languages, professional education
and field experience.
Graduates of the program are professional learning facilitators who model good teaching and good
learning strategies. In the proud tradition of Kennesaw State University, they are committed to
life-long learning as they continue to achieve their personal and professional goals.
