Praxis Tests

The state of Georgia requires that anyone that wants to be certified in Georgia as a teacher pass a certification test. The tests that Georgia uses are part of the Praxis Series. The Praxis Series is administered by Educational Testing Services. There are 2 sets of tests that are required by Georgia, Praxis I and Praxis II. For additional information, go to the website of the Georgia Professional Standards Commission: http://www.gapsc.com

Praxis I

  • Praxis I is a test of basic competencies in Reading, Writing, and Mathematics.
  • Praxis I will be required for all students seeking certification after March 1, 1999.
  • The state has determined that if you score above the following you will be exempt from taking the Praxis I:
    1. 1000 on the SAT (480 verbal and 520 math)
    2. 43 on the ACT (21 verbal and 22 math) CT (21 verbal and 22 math)
    3. 1030 on the GRE (490 verbal and 540 quantitative)

  • The Praxis I test can be taken in a paper-and-pencil format 6 times a year or in a computer based format at Sylvan Technologies Centers by appointment.
  • The cost of the Praxis I test is $75 for the paper version and $105 for the computer based version.
  • Kennesaw State University has a computer-based program, called Learning Plus, that can help you to prepare for Praxis I. You may purchase an authorization and a manual to use Learning Plus from the bookstore, for $20.00.
  • Students must pass Praxis I prior to applying for admission to the program in Foreign Language Education.

Praxis II

  • If you have already taken and passed the TCT in your subject area you do not have to take Praxis II.
  • Praxis II has both a multiple-choice section and a constructed response section unlike the TCT, which is only multiple choice.
  • The cost of Praxis is between $120 and $150, depending on the subject.
  • Praxis II is offered several times a year at regional sites around the state.
  • There are study booklets available for Praxis II called Test-at-a-Glance. They are different for each certification area. The booklets are located in the Graduate Studies Office, 3rd floor of Kennesaw Hall. They are free.
  • Please attend a Praxis II workshop, offered by faculty in foreign language education prior to registering for the Praxis II exam.

Dates and deadlines for upcoming tests are available in the Registration Bulletin. The Bulletin may be picked up in the office of Graduate Studies in Education, 3rd floor of Kennesaw Hall, or TRAC. For both tests there is a fee waiver request form. The money allocated for fee waivers is available, first come first serve, based on family size and income, beginning with July 1 of each year. Information and an application for a fee waiver are available in the registration booklet.
