Alternative Teacher Preparation Program
Fall 2008
Program Description:
The Alternative Teacher Preparation (ATP) Program in Foreign Languages is a non-degree undergraduate program leading to P-12 teacher certification in Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Latin, or Spanish. It is open to foreign language teachers who are currently employed full-time and have a temporary certificate--professional, provisional, intern, conditional, permit, etc. (This does not apply to private/independent schools). Upon admission, candidates receive an individualized certification plan.
Admission Requirements:
- Full-time employment as a foreign language teacher in a public or private SACS-accredited school in Georgia
- Sufficient time to complete the program of study before the temporary certificate expires. (This may require an extension of the certificate)
- Letter by the principal of the candidate’s school to verify employment and to request that KSU work with the teacher/candidate to complete the requirements towards the “Clear Renewable Certificate.”
- Admission to KSU as an undergraduate non-degree student for Fall 2008.
- Completed ATP application.
- Official transcripts of all university courses.
- Official professional development transcripts of all courses taken.
- Copies of test score reports (GACE Basic Skills, GACE Content), if taken.
- A copy of the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) certificate, if taken. For Chinese and Japanese, the ACTFL Writing Proficiency Exam (WPT) is also required for a recommendation for certification. It does not apply to Latin.
- Hand-written essay in the non-native language.
- Admission interview.
Application Deadline:
March 10, 2008. The documentation listed above (#3-9) must be received by this deadline. Applicants will be notified about the admission decision by May 1, 2008, and will be scheduled for individual appointments (#11) in June 2008. The essay (#10) is completed on campus at that time.
Approximate Time to Complete:
Dependent upon the type of temporary certificate held and the individual’s credentials upon entry.
Approximate Number of Semester/Quarter Hours for Completion:
Dependent upon prior work and certification status, if any, of the candidate.
Degrees, Certificate Awarded:
None. Recommendation for the clear renewable teaching P-12 certificate in Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Latin, or Spanish upon successful completion of the program.
