Dr. Keisha Hoerrner, chair, Department of First-Year Programs Meet the Chair

Dr. Keisha Hoerrner is the Chair for the Department of First-Year Programs and an Associate Professor of Communication. She is also Co-Editor of the Journal of Learning Communities Research, a peer-reviewed scholarly publication she helped launch in 2006.

Dr. Hoerrner teaches both KSU 1101, the first-year seminar course, and KSU 2290, a special topics version of the seminar course dedicated to global issues, within learning communities. As Chair of the Department of First-Year Programs, she supervises the nationally recognized first-year seminar program and the learning communities program for first-year students.

In addition to her work with incoming Kennesaw State University students, Dr. Hoerrner is also dedicated to global political engagement. She is faculty advisor for the KSU chapter of STAND, a national anti-genocide organization currently working to end the genocide in Sudan. She served as the 2007 Chair of the Darfur Urgent Action Coalition of Georgia, a statewide coalition of faith-based, human rights and advocacy groups. In early 2008 she was named a Co-State Director for the Not for Sale Campaign, a part of the modern-day abolitionist movement dedicated to ending slavery and human trafficking in the United States and abroad. In recent years, Dr. Hoerrner developed and helped organize a study abroad program in Germany and The Netherlands called “Following in Anne Frank’s Footsteps.” She serves on KSU’s American Democracy Project/Political Engagement Project committee and is committed to enhancing students’ understanding of civic and political engagement.

Prior to assuming administrative roles in University College in 2004, Dr. Hoerrner taught mass communication courses in KSU’s Communication Department. Her primary courses included media law, contemporary issues in mass media, and introduction to mass communication. She also developed and taught a special topics course exploring children and electronic media. She has published many journal articles and book chapters related to mass media issues.
