China - Management and Economics
May 11 - 28, 2008

In this program, participants will study the growth of Chinese private enterprise and the international management practices of foreign firms operating within China, including US multinational firms.   Participants will examine potential barriers to entering the Chinese market and strategies some US MNCs have used for entry into this market.  They will learn about the challenges that companies in China must surmount in order to achieve long term growth within this market, and they will observe some of  the strategies used by firms to capture business opportunities for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

In this program, participants will also learn about the drivers and issues behind China’s rapid economic development, and they will study the impact of China’s ascent on the US and global economy.  On the macro level, students will be exposed to a broad view of the Chinese economy: its evolution, market reforms, institutions and trade practices.  On a regional and local level, students will examine issues such as rural-to-urban migration, the legal environment, informality, types of urban unemployment and the role of foreign direct investments in furthering regional development and growth.  This program will provide participants with a great learning experience that includes a visit to Hong Kong and an opportunity to experience three major cities in mainland China - Zhu Hai, Shanghai and Bejing.
