Honoring Outstanding Students in International Studies

The Georgia Consortium for International Studies (GCIS)is proud to sponsor the GCIS Student Prizes honoring Outstanding Students in International Studies.
Three GCIS prizes are given annually
First Prize- $500
Second Prize $400
Third Prize $300

Who is eligible?
1. Applicants must be degree-seeking students at member institutions of the GCIS. Member institutions and their institutional representatives are listed below.
2. Applicants must currently major in a discipline related to International Studies: Foreign Language, International Affairs/Studies, History, Political Science, etc.

Judging Criteria:
Candidates will be evaluated based on:
1. academic performance measured by cumulative GPA;
2. the student’s involvement in that aspect of campus life that seeks to promote the internationalization of the college experience; and,
3. the submission to the competition judges of a paper or term project done originally to fulfill a particular course requirement that demonstrates the student’s interest, acumen, and potential in the realm of international studies. If the submitted paper or research project was originally completed in a language other than English, an English translation must be provided in addition to the original work.

What is required of prizewinners?
GCIS Prize winners are required to attend and make a brief presentation of the paper submitted to the Student Prize competition at the GCIS Symposium on International Education at Clayton College and State University, March 12 - 13, 2004. The GCIS will cover mileage, an overnight stay and symposium registration as part of the prize. Winners must attend the Symposium and participate to receive the cash prize.

What are the deadlines and submission procedures?
1. Applications are due to campus representative by December 15, 2003.
2. Applications of institutional nominees for statewide prizes are due in triplicate by January 15, 2004 to: Dr. Philip Szmedra, Coordinator, Office of International Programs, Georgia Southwestern State University, 800 Wheatley Street, Americus, GA 31709.
3. Awards will be announced via the GCIS campus representatives’ grouplist by February 15.
