About the Department of History, University of Ibadan

The University of Ibadan, Nigeria’s premier institution came into existence in 1948. The Department of History was one of the earliest to be established at the University when it opened on its temporary site at Eleyele Road in January, 1948.

Local Attractions

The University town of Ibadan is famous for the co-existence of extremes of traditional and modern cultures. Ibadan, the successor state to the Old Oyo Empire, has for a long period been a vibrant city with a relaxed, peaceful, accommodating and cosmopolitan atmosphere.

The focal point of Ibadan’s pre- and post modern history is the seven hills flung and scattered around the city. Ibadan has many tourist attractions, which include the Bower’s Tower, University of Ibadan Zoo, Ibadan Museum, Oje traditional market famous for the sale of locally produced fabrics, Mapo Hall, and the sprawling part of the traditional city.

International Travel and Local Transportation

The nearest International Airport is the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, about one hour from Ibadan. The Conference Organisers will arrange pick-ups from the airport. Local transportation within Ibadan consist of taxi cabs for hire, commercial motor bikes (okada) and mass transit public commercial buses. There are taxi and bus ranks within the University of Ibadan Campus.

A taxi to the campus from these hotels outside the University would cost approximately from less than 50 cents $2 per drop.

Food

Within the University Campus and a short distance from it are restaurants, local eateries (known locally as buka) and fast food joints catering for sophisticated clientele.

Conference organizers will provide lunches for the participants during the conference.
