Japan - Mathematics Teaching and Learning in Japanese Schools

Japanese students have historically performed at or near the top of the world in various international mathematics achievement studies. In this program, we will visit Japanese schools to observe mathematics instruction style known as “problem solving based instruction” in Japan. We will observe lessons, primarily in Elementary and Middle Schools (Grades 1 – 9) and discuss various issues related to this particular form of mathematics instruction. The participants will also have opportunities to meet and interact with Japanese prospective mathematics teachers. The program will also include visit to some historical and cultural sites in Japan.

MAED 4490 3 CR HRS (undergraduate level)
OR
MAED 7900 3 CR HRS (graduate level)
Housing:
Students will stay in hotels while travelling.
Admissions:
Minimum 2.0 Cumulative GPA and good academic standing.

Program Cost:
$3,453.00 Cost includes round-trip airfare from Atlanta to Tokyo, most of domestic travel expenses in Japan accommodations, some meals. Tuition is paid separately during Summer Registration. Financial Aid applicable.
Students should budget $250.00 for meals not included in the program cost.

Faculty:
Program Director Dr. Tad Watanabe is a native of Japan. The program will be conducted in collaboration with Professor Takashi Nakamura of the University of Yamanashi. One of Dr. Watanabe's research interests is the school mathematics curriculum materials in Japan. Dr. Watanabe was one of the leaders of a summer trip organized by Global Education Resources, which took US and Canadian teachers and administrators to Japan. Tel. 770-423-6376.
