Teaching the Middle East, II
A (Second) Workshop for Non-Specialist Faculty
October 29-31, 2004
At Emory University in Atlanta
Lectures, film, food, music, instructional materials
and classroom resources.
Begins Friday 3:30 PM; ends Sunday 12:00 Noon
The workshop is a follow-up to last
year’s highly successful workshop. The program
is free to University System of Georgia faculty, though
participants, or their home institutions, must cover
the cost of travel to Emory and lodging for two nights.
Workshop is limited to 70 places. Qualified
applicants will be accepted on a first-come first-served
basis, with limits to assure a healthy mixture of repeaters
from last year and new participants, as well as diversity
in the University System of Georgia institutions participating.
Teaching the Middle East II
is a three-day workshop targeted at non-specialists
who teach undergraduate core curriculum courses in the
arts, humanities and social sciences. The program will
build on the general material presented last year, but
it is still fully accessible to new participants with
little or no background in Middle East studies. Participants
will experience a lively, intense and multi-faceted
general education on Middle Eastern peoples and traditions
from top experts. The workshop includes free instructional
materials, an introduction to classroom resources and
discipline-based discussions of their use.
Lodging, Travel and Regional Cuisines:
Sessions will be held at Emory University; a block of
rooms has been reserved at University Inn near Emory
(($89 per night, double occupancy), but participants
are responsible for securing their own lodging as well
as covering the costs of travel to and from Atlanta.
Workshop meals will be provided free and will sample
the cuisines of the region.
Music and film: Participants will
enjoy a taste of Middle Eastern culture first-hand and
discuss the experience with experts.
Home institutions’ contributions:
Participants’ home institutions are asked to pay
roundtrip mileage to and from the conference at the
standard University System of Georgia rate and for the
cost of two nights lodging.
