Career Opportunities in Public History
Public historians work for a wide variety of private and public
agencies at the local, state, and national level. Public historians
design and implement educational programs at agencies such as the
Georgia Trust, and museums like the Atlanta History Center. They
produce documentaries for PBS and the History Channel, and manage
cultural resources, such as the Kennesaw National Battlefield or
Alcatraz Island. They curate historical collections for museums,
such as the Bremen Jewish Heritage Museum or the National Museum
of American History. Public historians work in heritage tourism,
such as at Colonial Williamsburg, and they promote and fund raise
for historical societies, such as the Historic Chattahoochee Commission.
Public historians assist cities and towns in protecting and preserving
threatened historic structures. They document historic homes and
businesses, and record and interpret oral histories of civil rights
activists, war veterans, factory workers, and farmers.
