Benefits -> LOA

Leave of Absence

As soon as they are aware of the need, employees who will be away from work for an extended period of time (more than one week) should contact Human Resources to begin the process of establishing a Leave of Absence (LOA).

Benefits while on LOA

Employees on any approved LOA may continue participation in applicable group insurance plans. If in an unpaid status, the employee must make arrangements with Human Resources to be invoiced for insurance premiums through the Business Services Office. KSU will continue to contribute any applicable employer premium amounts.

Bereavement Leave

Employees wishing to take an LOA due to a death may either use their Paid Time Off or request an unpaid Personal Leave.

Educational Leave

At the discretion of the supervisor, full time employees may be granted an Educational LOA for a period not to exceed one year. Except in rare circumstances, Educational Leave will be unpaid.

Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA)

For certain qualifying family and medical reasons, FMLA provides 12 weeks of job protection while an employee is on LOA. Medical Certification from the physician must accompany the FMLA Request Form. Disability benefits may also apply depending on the nature of the LOA. Refer to KSU's FMLA policy for more information.

Maternity Leave

Employees wishing to take Maternity (or Paternity) leave may use their Paid Time Off and/or pursue their options under FMLA. Disability benefits may also apply while an employee is deemed physically disabled by her physician.

Personal Leave

If an employee is in need of an LOA that does not qualify for another LOA option, they may pursue Personal Leave. Personal Leave is at the discretion of the President of the university. This LOA is unpaid and cannot exceed one year.

All LOAs are subject to University System of Georgia policy and procedures.
