Women's Work in the Long 19th Century

Fancywork vs. Housework - Interpretive Questions

1. What are some details in this advertisement for “Leadbeater’s Renowned Stove Polish” that mark distinctions in rank between the woman on the left and the one on the right? Among other things, you might consider differences in body position and dress.

2. In what ways is the work of the two women here connected? How are their tasks different? Why? Look at specific details associated with the two stoves and the implements the women are using when addressing these questions.

3. What inferences might we make about the relationship between these two women, and how? What differences in perception about that relationship might we expect these two women to have, and why?

4. Which of the two women represents the audience for the advertisement, and how do you know?

5. In what ways is this advertising card addressing some of the same issues treated in Stowe’s “The Lady Who Does Her Own Work”?
