The History of Alpha Delta Omega
The idea for an honor society began with the board members
of the National Organization for Human Service Education.
After several years of developmental efforts by numerous
participants led by Dr. Coggins, the society was officially
activated on March 2, 1998. Dr. Coggins is the founding
president of the Society. He emphasizes the fact that
the Society will attract a student body with expectations
of high achievement and recognize Human Service Majors
for the academic excellence and commitment to the Human
Service field.
What does the ADO Society represent?
Some honorary societies choose some Greek letters at random
to represent their society. Not so in the Human Services
Honor Society. We are fortunate in having goals and missions
that are easily represented by letters in the Greek alphabet.
First, the letters Alpha and Omega traditionally represent
the beginning and the end. As Human Service workers, we
are concerned with the development and maintenance of
quality of life throughout the life cycle, from beginning
to end.
Second, the letter Delta is used in the international
scientific community to represent change. We choose to
interpret the combination of these three symbols as positive
change and empowerment with an individual throughout his
or her entire life.
The name Alpha Delta Omega encompasses the entire spectrum
of Human Services, and emphasizes the lofty goals and
ideals of the organization.
