The MSW Program provides students with core
academic content and the competencies needed to function as advanced social
work practitioners. Graduates will be eligible for the Licensed Master of
Social Work (LMSW) and to pursue further clinical supervision requirements
to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW).
The Curriculum
The MSW program is a full-time course of study. Advanced standing is open to
those that have completed a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) from a CSWE
accredited institution. The one year, three-semester program requires 39
credit hours. All other applicants are considered for the two-year,
four-semester program, which consists of 60 credit hours, 48 in the
classroom and 12 in supervised field practicum. Students may choose to
specialize in one of two practice areas: Family and Children Services
or Addiction/Substance Abuse Services.
Family and Children Services
The Family and Children Services specialization focuses on the economic,
social status and service needs of families, youth and children. Special
courses of study are designed for students interested in child welfare,
mental health, juvenile justice, and other areas of service to families and
children. Students electing this specialization may qualify for
Title IV-E
stipends. Addiction/Substance
Abuse Services
This specialization explores the interaction of physical, psychological and
social aspects, as well as clinical methods of treatment, early intervention
and prevention, using the disease concept of chemical dependency. Students
who pursue this specialization will be positioned to become Certified
Addiction Counselors (CAC) following additional course work and supervised
experience. Field Practicum
Supervised direct practice with individuals, groups, or families in an
agency training setting introduces students to the realities of everyday
work with clients in an agency setting. Placement areas include, but are not
limited to, community mental health, child welfare, and substance-abuse
treatment. Advanced practice students complete two advanced practicum
courses; those in the two-year program complete four courses.
