What is ESL?
ESL is the acronym for English as a Second Language. Other similar acronyms are EFL (English as a Foreign Language) and ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages). ESL is English language learning for those whose first language is Spanish, Korean, French, Chinese, Russian, or any other language. ESL students have some degree of proficiency in English, but are perhaps not able to communicate as well as needed in their particular environment. ESL can be taught anywhere in the world. Many internationals come to the United States per year. They come to study at a U.S. university, find a job in the United States, travel just for a visit, or come to learn English in order to improve their communication abilities in their own countries. ESL is very important for individuals who wish to succeed in the United States. Without a good understanding of the English language, visitors, immigrants, and U.S. citizens cannot hope to excel in school, the workplace, or in daily life; English communication is the key to success.
There are many opportunities to learn English in the United States. Some people learn English by conversing with native English speakers and by watching English television shows. Others take general English classes in the local community centers or at church outreach programs. There are also independent businesses who specialize in English language learning. The University System of Georgia also offers ESL programs. Kennesaw State University is one such university. The Intensive English Program Center at Kennesaw State University offers English as a second language learners classes in English grammar, reading, writing, listening, speaking, vocabulary, and pronunciation. When learning English as a second language, much effort must be placed in studying the language. ESL programs are not magic pills to help you learn English overnight. Gaining mastery of the language can take months, years, or even a lifetime. Nevertheless, the Intensive English Program at KSU is here to help accelerate your learning English.
