THEATER (THTR)

THTR 1107. Arts in Society: Theater. 3-0-3.
Prerequisite: ENGL 0099, READ 0099, if required.
Through an examination of the role of arts in society, and an in-depth study of theatrical works, this interactive course provides an understanding of the creative process and develops skills in creativity and critical analysis. Heightened perceptual abilities will be developed through class experiences and field visits to a variety of arts events in dance, music, and visual arts, as well as in theater. (Attendance at some events requires paid admission.)

THTR 1513. Contemporary Theater Arts. 3-0-3.
Prerequisite: None.
An introduction to the field of theater, offering an overview of the discipline and profession for students considering a life and career in the theater.

THTR 1611. Theater Practicum*. 0-2-1.
Prerequisite: None.
Practical work in theater crafts, including lighting, costuming, set construction, box office procedures and other production elements.
*May be repeated for credit.

THTR 1612. Theater Practicum.* 0-4-2.
Prerequisite: None.
Practical work in theater crafts, including lighting, costuming, set construction, box office procedures and other production elements.

THTR 2193. Introduction to Performance. 3-03.
Prerequisite: THTR 1513.
An introduction to the field of performance studies and the art of oral interpretation. Emphasis on the solo performance of literary texts based on critical analysis.

THTR 2712. Theater Production.* 0-4-2.
Prerequisite: Four semesters of 1612.
Individually designated production and/or performance assignments, primarily in support of Classic TheaterWorks productions.

THTR 2713. Theater Production*. 0-6-3.
Prerequisite: Three semesters of THTR 1611.
Individually designated production and/or performance assignments, primarily in support of Classic TheaterWorks productions

THTR 3093. Folklore and Storytelling. 3-0-3.
Prerequisite: THTR 1513.
A study of folk narrative as a performed verbal art. Introduces students to folkloristics as a field of study and to the methods and practice of the art of storytelling.

THTR 3203. Principles of Acting. 3-0-3.
Prerequisite: THTR 1513.
The theory and practice of the actor's craft.

THTR 3213. Acting for the Camera. 3-0-3.
Prerequisite: THTR 3203.
An intermediate acting course applying acting techniques to the special demands of film and television.

THTR 3223. Acting Technique for the Large Stage. 3-0-3.
Prerequisite: THTR 3203.
An intermediate acting course applying acting craft to the demands of the large stage.

THTR 3293. Adapting and Staging Literary Texts. 3-0-3.
Prerequisite: THTR 1513.
Aesthetics, methods, and practice in presentational modes of group performance. Emphasis on the selection, adaptation, and staging of literary texts.

THTR 3403. Play Analysis for Production. 3-0-3.
Prerequisite: THTR 1513.
Textual analysis of playscripts, with an emphasis on the perspective of the practitioner of theater. A preparatory course for the history of theater and drama sequence.

THTR 3493. Performance Art. 3-0-3.
Prerequisite: THTR 1513.
History, theories, and practice of performance art form futurism to the present. Emphasis is on the creation and performance of image, auteur approaches to literary, mythic, visual art, and personal sources, and the writing and staging of performance pieces.

THTR 693. Myth, Epic, and Oral Traditions. 3-0-3.
Prerequisite: THTR 1513.
A study of various approaches to the analysis, interpretation, and performance of creation, fertility and heroic myths and epics from world oral traditions. Emphasis is on the relationship between orality and literacy.

THTR 3813. Visual Imagination. 3-0-3.
Prerequisite: Completion of 24 hours.
A course in the visual aspects of the art of theater that focuses on the principles, the elements and the history and current practice of visual design for the theater.

THTR 3823. Design Skills. 3-0-3.
Prerequisite: THTR 3813.
Basic design skills including drafting, sketching and rendering. Offered in versions oriented specifically toward set design or costume design in alternating years.

THTR 3853. History of Costume and Decor. 3-0-3.
Prerequisite: THTR 3813.
A survey of historical dress, architecture, and furnishings as it relates to theater.

THTR 3398. Internship. 1-9 credit hours.
Prerequisite: Approval of department chair.
A supervised, credit-earning work experience of one academic semester with a previously approved business firm, private agency, or government agency.

THTR 4400. Directed Study. 1-3 credit hours.
Prerequisite: Approval of instructor, and department chair.
Selected topics of an advanced nature, which may include original research projects.

THTR 4313. Directing. 3-0-3.
Prerequisite: THTR 3403.
Studies in the fundamentals of stage directing for the stage. Theoretical studies will be augmented with the opportunity to direct selected scenes and to observe working directors.

THTR 4513. Theater History I: Classical to Neoclassical Theater and Drama. 3-0-3.
Prerequisite: THTR 3403.
A history of the theater and its literature from Classical Greece and Rome through the medieval period and the European Renaissance.

THTR 4523. Theater History II: Baroque to Contemporary Theater and Drama. 3-0-3.
Prerequisite: THTR 3403.
A history of the theater and its literature covering the major developments of the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

THTR 4813. Scene Design. 3-0-3.
Prerequisite: THTR 3823.
Building blocks for scene design with an emphasis on transforming written text into three-dimensional visual language, and working through fundamental scene design problems.

THTR 4823. Lighting Design for the Stage. 3-0-3.
Prerequisite: THTR 3813.
Study of lighting design for the stage, including study of lighting instruments and control.

THTR 4833. Costume Design. 3-0-3.
Prerequisite: THTR 3823.
Study of principles, methods and processes for costume design for the stage.

THTR 4490. Special Topics.* 1-3 credit hours.
Prerequisite: Approval of instructor and departmental chair.
Topics of special interests to students and faculty.

THTR 4953. Senior Seminar. 3-0-3.
Prerequisite: THTR 3403 and 90 credit hours.
An investigation into contemporary topics in the American theater and performance studies, selected annually. Advanced students will encounter and respond to contemporary theories and practices. May involve applied artistic work.
