SUBJECT: Final Actions from Fall 1998 of the Undergraduate Policies and Curriculum Committee, the Graduate Policies and Curriculum Committee and the Senate
UNDERGRADUATE POLICIES AND CURRICULUM COMMITTEE APPROVALS:
Changes will be reflected in the 1999-2000 Undergraduate Catalog; copies are on file in the Office of Institutional Research & Academic Support Services and the Horace W. Sturgis Library.* New Undergraduate Programs*
>B.S. in Sport Management was approved by Board of Regents in July, 1998.* Change in Degree and Program Requirements*
General Education Curriculum
A change to the foreign language component under Institutional Options of General Education Curriculum. The requirement is modified to read "any foreign language at the 1002 level or higher."Coles College of Business
Bagwell College of Education
- Accounting major moves ACCT 4100-Advanced Financial Accounting and ACCT 4200- Advanced Managerial Accounting from major field requirements to major field electives.
- Coles College of Business makes changes to academic policies related to admission requirements. A Sophomore GPA Requirement increases the GPA from 2.50 to 2.70 for the seven courses required before a business major can enroll in upper-division (3000-4000) courses.
- Change in degree requirements for B.B.A. in Economics restricts to six credit hours the major field electives earned from finance and quantitative analysis courses.
- Change in degree requirements for B.B.A. in Finance restricts to six credit hours the major field electives earned from economics and quantitative analysis courses.
- Changes in degree requirements for B.B.A. in Operations & Purchasing reducing the number of credit hours of major field requirements from 18 to 12 semester hours (by shifting two former major field requirements to the list of major field electives from which to choose) and correspondingly increases the required number of credit hours of major field electives from 6 to 12 semester hours.
- Each major business program was changed as follows: 1) Upper Division Major Requirements increased by 3 semester hours 2) An Information Technology Requirement totaling 3 semester hours was added 3) Non-business Electives were decreased by 3 semester hours.
College of Health and Human Services
- English Education major under required teaching field courses is amended to read: "Students who take ENGL 2270 must make a 'B' or better to take ENGL 3260. Students who pass the departmentâs basic language competency test with an 80% or better may substitute for ENGL 2270 an English course selected with an English education advisor."
- Teacher Education admission requirements revisions were made. The proposed approved changes were: 1) increase in GPA requirement for admission and retention from 2.50 to 2.75 and 2) require students for continuance in teacher ed to go through a formal progress check after submitting the Intent to Register for Teaching of Specific Subject (TOSS) Courses form for the appropriate program area signed by their advisor to the appropriate TOSS coordinator.
College of Humanities and Social Sciences
- Changes in newly approved Exercise and Health Science major. The Fitness Administration concentration was removed and replaced with a pre-professional concentration which incorporates a stronger science based curriculum. These changes were made because of the approved Sport Management major.
- RN/BSN nursing students will receive advanced placement exemption credit for NURS 4414 upon completion of NURS 3320. NURS 4414 will be added to the other courses for which exemption credit is currently given, changing total exemption credits from 22 to 25. This change was made because the faculty of the BDN program determined the content of NURS 4414 is repetitive of content in Associate Degree and other initial licensure programs. NURS 4414 used to be combined with community health content in one course but now are divided into two courses in which the NURS 4412 with the community health content is still required for RN students.
- Public and Social Services major changes lower division requirements by removing SOCI 2251- Social Problems and replacing that course with SPAN 2030. Also under upper division major requirements, PSS 3300-Foundation of Social Theory & Practice is removed and replaced by HS 3200 Social Welfare Policy. These changes were made to more specifically address the academic needs of students who are preparing to work in a variety of human service agencies that are influenced by public policy, continuous and emerging problems that face individuals, as well as changing client populations.
College of Science and Mathematics
- History major adds phrase for each concentration stating "an appropriate minor may be substituted with the approval of major advisor."
- Psychology major adds mathematics as a department in which to take related studies courses.
- Communication major adds a Public Relations track and make adjustments in major accordingly.
*Formal Minor Programs*
- Changes in biochemistry option of General Chemistry track. Changes made because some items were incorrectly listed and to make the supporting discipline better meet the needs of students.
