SUBJECT: Final Actions from Fall 1999 through February 2000 of the Undergraduate Policies and Curriculum Committee, the Graduate Policies and Curriculum Committee and the Senate

APPROVED UNDERGRADUATE POLICIES AND CURRICULUM COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATIONS:
These approvals will be reflected in the 2000-2001 Undergraduate Catalog; copies are on file in the Office Academic Affairs and the Horace W. Sturgis Library.

*Change in Existing Policy*

• The graduation requirement in the Academic Services and Policies section of the

undergraduate catalog is changed. Under Graduate Requirements #2 the policy now reads: "Complete the chosen program of study with a grade of "C" or better in all courses listed under the major, including those listed as Lower Division Major Requirements.

• The Bachelor of Science in Sociology was given final approval from the Board of Regents in

August 1999.

School of the Arts

• Audition requirements for Voice are updated for all degrees in Music to include a more specific

description.
• Transfer Admissions section for Music majors adds the following statement: "Students who

transfer completed baccalaureate applied performance credit to KSU will be required to take additional applied performance study and additional ensemble so as to parallel remaining semesters of degree program of study at KSU.

• The Accounting Information Systems course is moved from a major field elective to a major

field requirement. The Accounting Profession, through the American Institute of CPA's has identified knowledge of accounting systems as one of the core competencies for entry into the accounting profession. AIS is the platform for all fields of accounting and as such, the department should include AIS as a required course for the major. The course number is changed from ACCT 4500 to ACCT 3300.
• Coles College makess editorial change in their graduation requirements that are consistent with the current graduation requirements of KSU. The minimum grades for all upper-division major requirements for BBA now reads: "Business majors must earn a grade of "C" or better in the major field courses that constitute the Upper Division Major Requirements (including upper division business core courses, information technology requirement, major field requirements, and major field electives).

• The student teaching admission requirement of registration for the appropriate content area

Praxis II tests was dropped. Faculty have indicated that the timing of this requirement is inappropriate as much of what students need before taking the test is gained in student
teaching. Praxis II is a state requirement for certification. It really has no bearing on student teaching.
• Admission to Teacher Education adds the following statement to their policy: "A criminal

history background check will be performed prior to admission to teacher education and may preclude admission to teacher education programs."
• Board of Regents recommended an increase in content area by Middle Grades Education

majors. While middle grades program at KSU is currently restricted by available hours in the major, encouraging students to take an additional three hours of coursework abides by the spirit of the Regents' principle. Faculty in the content areas have or will have preparation courses suitable for middles grades majors to take.
• Lower division requirement in Middle Grades Education is amended. It adds the option of

choosing SCI 2201 or BIOL 2208 or CHEM 1151/1151L. It recommends those choosing to concentrate study in science should take either BIOL 2108 or CHEM 1151/1151L.

• Description of Public and Social Services program is updated to include AH certificate

program.

• BA in History major made several changes including cleanup of incorrect titles and course

numbers; addition of new courses to American History & Culture Concentration; addition of certificate programs to curriculum.
• Psychology major made several changes including 1) dropping lab sections for several courses

(PSYC 3325/3345/3380, PSYC 4410/4415/4455, and PSYC 4499); 2) increased hours of several courses from three to four (PSYC 4410/4415/4455); 3) dropped PSYC 3295 and increased required psychology upper-level electives by three hours; 4) increased hours of PSYC 3210 from one to three; 5) broadened courses acceptable for upper and lower level non-psychology electives; and 6) made prerequisite changes for some courses.

• Under Related Studies for Biology major: 1) deleted COM 3305 and 2) added GIS courses.

• Wording for minor and certificate program definitions was changed. This information can be

*Policy Changes*

• The provisions for Graduate Credit for Undergraduates were updated in order to be consistent

with current policies for admission to graduate studies and consistent with the Integrated
Studies option. The section on Graduate Credit for Undergraduates shall require an
undergraduate cumulative grade point average of 3.0 and submission of all graduate
application materials, including the appropriate admissions test scores and program specific
required materials.
• The section on Graduate Credit for Undergraduates and the section on Integrated Graduate

Studies should include the following statement: "This option is not available for students
wishing to take courses in the M.Ed. and MSN programs unless the students has the required
certification or licensure for admission to the program
• Admission criteria for M.Ed. program incorporates the following changes:

-adds requirement of resume and letters of recommendation to admissions documents

-increases minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA to 2.75 for full admission

-enlarges provisional admission status to include students with cumulative undergraduate grade point averages between 2.5 and 2.75.

• MSIS program raises GRE requirement from 1350 to 1425 to improve comparability of GMAT

and GRE scores. MSIS accepts both GMAT and GRE scores.

• A new concentration under the MPA program entitled College Student Success and Enrollment

Services will be offered beginning Fall, 2000.
• A Master of Science in Conflict Management was approved by the Board of Regents in October

1999. The first class will be admitted Fall semester 2000.
• The Reading Institute in collaboration with the Departments of Early Childhood Education

and Middle Grades Education proposed a Reading Endorsement Program. The program
addresses the Regent's principle that focuses on ensuring classroom teachers are effectively
prepared to teach reading. The program addresses EDUC course work that is applicable to
the reading endorsement.
• Preschool/Special Education add-on program approved campus wide and is pending final

approval from the Professional Standards Commission (PSC).
• The Master of Science in Nursing is offering a new concentration in Primary Care of the Adult to meet the demands of students who are interested in providing primary care to adult clients only. The courses are designed to prepare them to practice in this arena and to sit for the national certification examination as adult nurse practitioners.

FINAL ACTIONS ON RECOMMENDATIONS FOR UNIVERSITY SENATE ACTIONS - FALL SEMESTER 1999.
The following Senate recommendations have been approved for implementation. Where applicable, these approvals will be included in the latest editions of the catalogs and/or handbooks of Kennesaw State University.

• Ex Officio (non-voting) Members of the Graduate Faculty will include: The President, Vice

President for Academic Affairs, Academic Deans, and Department Chairs. Ex officio membership on the Graduate Faculty does not carry approval to teach graduate courses or direct graduate students. Administrative faculty may hold both ex officio and regular appointments to the Graduate Faculty. This information will be included as the last section of the Graduate Faculty Status subsection II under Faculty Appointment & Contracts (Section Seven).
• Changes to Graduate Faculty Status ? Guidelines in the Faculty Handbook include: Note:

#4 Appointment of Part-Time or Adjunct Graduate Faculty requires appointment as a part-time or
adjunct faculty member as specified in Section IX and review for permission to teach graduate courses by the Dean of Graduate Studies. Part-time or adjunct graduate faculty must meet the same qualifications as graduate faculty. The Dean of Graduate Studies review of their credentials may take place at the same time or any time after the faculty member is being reviewed for employment. Part
time or adjunct faculty will be approved for a period of up to three years, contingent upon their re-
appointment each year during the three-year period as part-time or adjunct faculty.

materials and approves temporary appointment to the Graduate Faculty and appointment of part-time or adjunct graduate faculty.
