MEMORANDUM

TO: Faculty, Staff and Students

FROM: Betty L. Siegel, President

SUBJECT: Final Actions from Spring 1999 of the Undergraduate Policies and Curriculum Committee, the Graduate Policies and Curriculum Committee and the Senate

APPROVED UNDERGRADUATE POLICIES AND CURRICULUM COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATIONS:
These approvals will become effective in Fall Semester 1999. Changes will be reflected in the 2000-2001 Undergraduate Catalog; copies are on file in the Office of Institutional Research & Academic Support Services and the Horace W. Sturgis Library.

* New Undergraduate Programs*
>A Bachelor of Science in Sociology was approved the UPCC and is pending final approval by the Board of Regents.

* Change in Degree and Program Requirements*
College of Health and Human Services
>Department of Baccalaureate Degree Nursing proposed the following changes:

Admission -raising the minimum admission adjusted GPA from 2.5 to 2.7 to parallel with other professional programs on campus (education, business) which have raised their admission GPA to 2.75 and 2.70 respectively. This is in keeping with rising professional expectations, increasing difficulty level of the licensing examination, and difficulty passing the licensing examination by students with lower GPA's. The admission policy is changed to read: "Applicants must have an adjusted 2.7 cumulative grade point average with a minimum of grade of "C" in each required science and mathematics course."

Readmission statement is changed to read: "Students interested in reentry must notify the department chair in writing of their interest." (At least one month in advance was deleted here). Courses are offered every semester, therefore, a student who fails in one semester may not have at least one month to notify the chair of their interest.

Transfer Credit for Nursing Courses - Course must have been taken within the past two years and a grade of "B" or better received in course. Nursing courses older than two years will be considered only if the student has been out of the former program for two terms or less and was continuously enrolled in the former nursing program. Students who are not eligible to return to their former nursing program will not be eligible to receive transfer credit for any nursing courses.

College of Science and Mathematics
> CSIS Department has scheduled a visit with CSAB (Computer Science Accreditation Board) for purpose of applying for accreditation for the computer science program. The proposed changes are to satisfy these accreditation requirements:

  1. Change science core requirement to physics sequence (either one although the calculus based one is preferred.)
  2. Move Physics 3340 from a major elective to a major requirement - reduce the number of major
    electives from 5 to 4
  3. Change requirements for the major electives from any 4 to at least 2 must be CSIS courses.
  4. Reduce Free Electives from 12 hours to 11 hours be keep total program hours at 123.

> B.S. in Mathematics Program made the following changes:

  1. Expanding Guided and Interdisciplinary Electives part of major to include courses from all disciplines (not just science, computer science, business, and education). The department recommends several viable combinations of math and disciplines not included in the previous program description.
  2. Additional choices were placed in Mathematics electives. MAED 4416 and MAED 4475 were added here so that Mathematics majors wishing to concentrate in education could use courses which provided them with field experience just as the other math majors use internships and coop courses.
  3. Restriction to the number of hours of MATH 3396, 3398, MAED 4416 and 4475 which can be used as math electives to 3 for each course. Each of these four courses can be taken for more than 3 hours credit, and department did not feel it would be desirable for a math major to satisfy all of her/his math electives with one course.

*Formal Minor Programs*
The following minor programs have been approved and will be listed in the 2000-2001 catalog along with information pertaining to advisement and declaration approval.

*Certificate Program*
The proposed certificate program for Public History was not given final approval by the Vice President for Academic Affairs and was returned to the college Dean with suggestions for revision and encouragement to resubmit. The proposed program was not sufficiently structured and focused as per the guidelines and included more required hours than other existing certificate programs.

GRADUATE POLICIES AND CURRICULUM COMMITTEE APPROVALS:
Changes will be reflected in the 2000-2001 Graduate Catalog; copies are on file in the Office of Institutional Research & Academic Support Services and the Horace W. Sturgis Library. An asterisk indicates that the changes were approved in time for publication in the 1999-2000 catalog.

*New Program*
A Master of Science in Conflict Management was approved in concept by the GPCC and is pending final approval from The Board of Regents.

*Change in Degree and Program Requirements*
*>Admission requirements for programs in Graduate Business revised.
*-International applicants must have foreign credentials evaluated by an independent evaluation service that is a member of the National Assoc. of Credential Evaluation Services, Inc. Beginning Summer semester 2000, international students applying to the MBA or Macc programs will be accepted and must begin their graduate study summer term. The initial summer term will be devoted to an acculturation and language experience. The purpose of this activity is to prepare international students for graduate study in the United States. There will be no applications accepted for Fall or Spring semesters from international applicants.
*-Beginning Fall semester 1999, the GRE will not longer be accepted.
*-Macc and MBA degrees require additional materials be sent to program director. See Graduate Admission section of 1999-2000 catalog for details.
*- Macc, MBA and MBA for Physician Executives admissions requirements are revised. See Graduate Admission section under Admissions Requirements for Degree Programs and individual program sections for details.
*- Provisional Standing is no longer given or available for students applying for admission to the Macc or MBA programs.

*>Master in Accounting Program is re-structured and now consists of 36 course work hours in three areas:
- 18 credits -- 6 required core (2 accounting and 4 MBA)
- 6 credits-- 2 accounting or MBA electives
- 12 credits -- 4 courses to fulfill one of 3 "'tracks"
Rationale: Shift to general business management perspective from a technical perspective in the accounting perspective in the accounting profession. This program includes more general business coverage and allows students the flexibility of concentrating their accounting course in one of 3 tracks.
>MBA for Physician Executives Program was re-structured in order to conform to a less time consuming program. The program is extended to 21 months and will meet just one weekend a month. This re-design of the program requires less of a time commitment for physicians, thereby appealing to a population from outside Atlanta. Physicians indicated that they would be willing to travel into Atlanta for one weekend a month rather than every other weekend as is currently required. Coles College of Business responded to this feedback in the new structure of the program and is currently advertising throughout the region. The number of inquiries has already indicated extensive interest.
