Student Media Board
Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2013
Present: T. Grindel, B. Murphy, E. Wells, E. Fuller, L. Bishop, S. Wiltsee, R. Burel, E. Bonza
Absent: T. Duke
Excused: J. Ratchford, A. Mowrey, A. Douglas
The meeting was called to order by board chair T. Grindel at 3:10p.m.
The first agenda item was The Sentinel editor in chief selection process, specifically the term length. Currently The Sentinel editor term is two per year; a summer/fall term and a spring term. OWL Radio and the other publications have full year terms (July 1-June 30). E. Bonza discussed the original rationale behind this.
A proposal was put on the table that The Sentinel editor also have a full year term. E. Wells made the motion, seconded by B. Murphy. The motion carried. E. Bonza will arrange to have the change to the SMB Bylaws added to the SABAC agenda for possible approval.
Whether to open applications and hold interviews if an editor or GM desire to run for a second term was also discussed. B. Murphy felt that the opening should at least be opened internally to other KSUSM students. No motion was made and dissuasion was tabled until a future meeting.
A mentoring process by which new editors could be “groomed” by current management was discussed. The board decided that this process should be up to the individual media outlets. The chair requested that each editor and the GM share their proposals with the board by the next meeting.
The board decided that the next meeting would be set for Monday, November 25, 2013. The exact time would be determined by polling all members. This meeting would also be the interview and selection meeting for The Sentinel editor in chief fall 2014 term.
Area reports were presented by the student leaders for all the media outlets.
The meeting was adjourned at 4:30p.m.
