Student Media Board
December 2, 2010
Dr. Jerome Ratchford, Ryan Schill, Cory Mullis, Reginald Joseph, Christopher Michael Wong, Ed Bonza. Guests/Candidates: Caitlyn Van Orden, Carolyn Grindrod, James Swift.
Absent: Michelle Azriel, Aixa M. Pascual, Dr. Jan Phillips, Berlin Sylvestre, Ifeanyi Amajor, Kelly Marble, Carolyn Carlson
The meeting was called to order by secretary to the board, E. Bonza at 1:07 p.m.
As several new members were present, introductions were made. Candidates for the spring Sentinel editor position were informed about a possible lack of quorum and given a choice between rescheduling the interviews or accepting proxy votes. All candidates agreed to proxies.
Interviews for the 2010 spring term editor of The Sentinel began at 1:12 p.m. C. Grindold was interviewed first.
J. Swift was interviewed for Sentinel EIC by the Board at 1:43 p.m.
C. Van Orden was interviewed for Sentinel EIC by the Board at 1:59 p.m.
After interviews the board moved into closed deliberations at 2:24 p.m. Candidates and non members were asked to leave. After discussion, each voting member presented their recommendation for the position. As the SMB was one member short of quorum, it was understood that the board would make a recommendation.
The board also discussed the opening of the Talon Magazine editor position for the second half of the term. Consistent with SMB bylaws, the board discussed first appointing the current interim editor before opening a search, if necessary. A motion was made to appoint R. Schill as Talon editor for the remainder of the 2010-2011 term. The vote was unanimous.
Guests and candidates present were invited back into the meeting room and position results announced. It was the recommendation of the board that C. Van Orden be appointed as Sentinel editor in chief, spring 2011 term.
E. Bonza agreed to request proxy votes and include them in the SMB minutes.
The meeting was adjourned at 3:35 p.m.
Proxy votes were counted by E. Bonza Friday, Dec. 3, 10:48 a.m.; they support the SMB’s recommendation.
