February 11 2005 Meeting


Members: Loretta Garrett, Marsha Cohen, Melissa Spielholz, Ed Bonza, Joey Tyson, Jennifer Hafer, Kenyan Moore, Jenny Cotton, Kiki Amanatidis, Dr. King.

Guests: LaToya Cole, Kimberly Everhart, Colleen Wells, Tara O'Shea, Nick Mracek, Meredith Pruden.

Excused: Nikhil Moro, Ashlie Adler.

The meeting was called to order by Chair J. Hafer at 2:39 p.m.

M. Cohen explained her reasons for requesting the meeting. E. Bonza gave a brief overview of the incidents, as he saw it, resulting in the meeting. 

M. Pruden presented her concerns and described the circumstances from her perspective. Pruden was questioned, in order, by N. King, J. Cotton, J. Hafer and N. Mracek.

M. Spielholtz clarified her position and defended her actions, specific to the plagiarism charge.

All present were then permitted to ask questions or make statements, once recognized by the chair. Comments and questions were made, in order, by K. Moore, T. O'Shea, J. Cotton, Mracek, Hafer, Spielhotz, L. Garrett, J. Tyson, Cohen, King, C. Wells, L. Cole.

Board Chair Hafer raised the issue of the plagiarized/fabricated story in the Feb. 9, 2005 issue. Spielholtz clarified her position and defended her actions.

Hafer closed the meeting for deliberations. Three matters were discussed: the Sentinel editor's actions and the board's response, if any, student staff grievance procedures, and the implementation of a plagiarism policy.

In regards to grievance procedures: King moved to give the advisor (Assistant Director of the Student Life Center) "last resort" veto power in non-editorial matters. Cotten moved to give final appeal to the Student Media Board.

In regards to the editor personnel issue: probation, to include a conflict management session/workshop with all editors and managers, was approved.

In regards to the plagiarism policy: the guidelines were accepted as presented.

Tyson moved to accept the probation, grievance procedures, and plagiarism policy as finalized. K. Amanatidis seconded. The motion passed at 3:42 p.m.

The meeting was adjourned.
