Never say Larry Nelson has outgrown his hometown roots.

This year Nelson, who grew up in the north Cobb area, is wrapping his driver inside a Kennesaw State headcover, a gift from the school for his support of its athletics program. Next March the school, which competes in NCAA Division I, will host the Larry Nelson Intercollegiate at Château Élan. Thirty teams -- 15 men's, 15 women's -- will compete in the first event.

"We're thrilled that Larry is going to allow us to use his name," said Dennis Stubblefield, Kennesaw's director of golf. "He's such a great guy and he was more than willing to help."

Nelson attended the school when it was a junior college and still lives in Marietta. He honed his skills at nearby Pinetree Country Club in Kennesaw before finding fame and success on the PGA Tour.

At last week's Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am in Tampa, Nelson said," They wanted me to get more involved. They said, 'We're going to make you happy you're an alumni.' So they gave e a carry bag and a headcover."

And he was using both.

Nelson withdrew from the tournament before the final round because of a stiff neck.
