Instruction Information and Scheduling an Instruction Session for your class

General Information

The Sturgis Library offers a wealth of resources: print and electronic books, government documents, periodicals, hundreds of informational databases, access to interlibrary loan, and more. New library resources are added all the time, and access to existing resources is always being enhanced. Library instruction sessions are available to expand faculty and student use of these extensive resources.

Instruction sessions, conducted by Reference librarians, are available upon request for KSU classes and for small groups involved in work on collaborative class-related projects.

Most instruction sessions take place in one of the library’s instructions labs. These labs can accommodate up to 32 students per session. Trainings sessions for larger classes may require the class to be split into two groups and/or to be scheduled in two different sessions. Training sessions may sometimes be scheduled in other electronic classrooms throughout the campus (Burruss labs, Nursing classrooms, etc.). Faculty is required to have an assignment prepared so that students may ask questions as it relates to their particular assignment. Faculty is also required to attend the library instruction with their classes.

The Sturgis Library also provides Open Classes for students, faculty and staff. These sessions are designed to create an informal and relaxed environment for patrons to ask questions specific to their research. No registration is required. Each session will last 45 minutes to an hour. The classes are first come first serve. The class is limited to 30 students.

The Sturgis Library website provides a new online Library Handbook and Visual Tour which introduces new users to many of the library’s resources, services, and collections. Because of greatly increased foot traffic through the Reference floor of the library and growing concerns about noise levels, the library no longer offers general tours of the first floor. Students attending training sessions will go directly to one of the library labs. Training sessions must be scheduled at least 48 hours in advance. Because of the sheer volume of request received and in order to allow a librarian to prepare for your sessions, we ask for at least 48-hour notice.

Sessions are scheduled in the order in which requests are received. During the start of each semester and during peak times, it is advisable to have a first, second, and third choice of dates. You will receive a confirmation, usually within 48 hours, of your training date and time via phone or email.

Sessions can be scheduled during the following times:
Mon – Thurs8 am – 9 pm
Friday8 am – 8 pm
Saturday10 am – 5 pm (subject to staff availability)
Sunday1 pm – 5 pm (subject to staff availability)

Course instructors are required to attend each library training session with their students. If an instructor cannot be present, the library training session can be rescheduled for a later date.
