Wireless Network Information

What can you access on KSU's wireless network?

  • You will have access to the internet, to web servers, WebCT, Atlas, etc.
  • You will NOT have access to applications locally installed in the library or the computer labs, the "P" drive, anything related to Novell, nor will you be able to attach to campus printers or to campus print queues.
  • For access to the KSU Network (LAN) through your wireless (NetID authentication required), see http://its.kennesaw.edu/netaccess/gettingstarted.htm for instructions.

Where Can You Use the Wireless Network?

For a complete listing of available locations, check the ITS page, Locations for "KSU Wireless" Network Access.

What You Need:

  • A laptop with either a built-in wireless card or an installed external PCMCIA wireless network card. KSU is currently using the IEEE 802.11b standard. Wireless cards for the 802.11g standard need to be backward compatible to the 802.11b standard.
  • A web browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Netscape, Opera) installed on your laptop.
  • TCP/IP installed on your laptop.
  • You may also need the original system software CD-ROM for your operating system (Windows XP/Vista).

To install an external wireless adapter card and drivers:

  • Install your wireless card according to the instructions provided with the card.
Generally, when the card is inserted into the open PCMCIA socket, the computer will recognize the new card ("New Hardware Found") and prompt you install the drivers. Load the drivers, if necessary, from the manufacturer's CD-ROM as directed by the instructions that came with your card.

How to Configure Your Laptop to KSU's Wireless Network:

  • TCP/IP must be installed and set to do DHCP (obtain IP address automatically)

    For Windows Vista:

    For Mac OS X:
    1. How to Configure Wireless Access
  • IF your wireless card configuration requires you to specify or look for a wireless network "name" (esid or ssid), look for "KSUwireless". How you do this differs with the manufacturer of the card you have installed. Most cards automatically find the wireless network and ask if you want to connect.
  • Turn OFF the Enable Encryption setting in your wireless card configuration; check your manufacturer's documentation to find the configuration settings for your card.

What If You Have Problems Connecting?

If you have checked to make certain that

  1. you have properly installed your wireless card
  2. and the appropriate software
  3. and it is all correctly configured,

but you are still unable to connect to the wireless network, you should contact the KSU IT department either by visiting their website or calling their helpdesk at 770-423-6999.
