Music History Placement and Course Exemption Policy for:

Music 3311 History of Music I

Music 3312 History of Music II


Any incoming music major (Freshman or Transfer) may request an exemption test for either of the required courses in the Junior Music History Sequence.

Download study guides/listening lists from the KSU Music website. Contact Edward Eanes at eeanes@kennesaw.edu to schedule an appointment for the exam. In addition to excerpt identification, the listening portion may include style/genre identification of works not included on the listening list.

A score of 80% or greater is required to exempt the course.

Music 3311 History of Music I (Ancient- Pre Classical)

  1. Review Chapters 1-15 of Concise History of Western Music by Barbara Russano Hanning (WW Norton: 2010)
  2. Review terms listed on the study guide.
  3. Practice aural identification of Style Periods (Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque).
  4. Practice aural and score identification of genres (Mass, Motet, Madrigal, Aria, Recitative, Comic Opera, Serious Opera, Oratorio, Lutheran Cantata, Solo Concerto, Concerto Grosso, Prelude, Fugue, Trio Sonata, and Suite).

Music 3312 History of Music II (Classical-Post Modern)


  1. Review Chapters 16-25 of Concise History of Western Music by Barbara Russano Hanning (WW Norton: 2010)
  2. Review terms listed on the study guide.
  3. Practice aural and score identification of Style Periods (Classical, Romantic, Modern, Post Modern).
  4. Practice aural and score identification of major composers and genres (Concerto, Symphony, Symphonic Poem, Opera, Requiem, Jazz, Ragtime, and String Quartet).
