Workshops Under Development
OSP regularly offers workshops, presentations, web casts, and other learning opportunities for faculty seeking help with grants. Our offerings are designed to be informational, informal, and interesting. All are carefully scheduled to accommodate faculty members’ busy schedules, and popular ones will be repeated.
New topics under development include one for humanities faculty on applying to the National Endowment for the Humanities, one for arts faculty on applying to the Georgia Council for the Arts, one for faculty in the sciences and social sciences on communicating with program officers at federal agencies, and one for faculty in any discipline on developing grant budgets. OSP expects to be able to offer these and other programs in spring of 2008.
Faculty who would like to request workshops, presentations, or other types of informational sessions should feel free to email their suggestions to sponprog@kennesaw.edu. Customized offerings can also be organized for departments when there are shared interests.

Funding Opportunities in the Humanities: How to Seek Support from the NEH
OSP hosted a statewide one-day workshop on seeking funding for grant projects in the humanities on Friday, April 11, 2008. The lead presenter was Dr. Fred Winter, Senior Program Officer for the National Endowment for the Humanities. A special session was also presented by Ms. Laura McCarty, Vice President of the Georgia Humanities Council. Please click here for handouts from this workshop.
Proposal Writing for Research and Programs
On Wednesday, March 26, 2008, OSP hosted The Twelve Keys to Successful Grantwriting and The Ins and Outs of Federal Funding. These two half-day, research proposal writing workshops were led by Bob Lowman, Ph.D., Associate Vice Chancellor for Research and adjunct associate professor of psychology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His areas of expertise include research policy, planning, regulatory compliance, training, and infrastructure.
Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Webcast
On October 25, 2007, OSP hosted a web conference on two Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) programs, the Nursing Education, Practice and Retention (NEPR) program and the Nursing Workforce Diversity Program (NWD). Both programs aim to increase educational opportunities for nursing departments and schools.
These are standing programs for which KSU is eligible to apply. Deadlines are typically mid-November to December. It is sensible to plan your proposal up to a year ahead of submission. Contact OSP if you would like the notes from this program.
NIH AREA Workshop
AREA is the National Institutes of Health’s acronym for “Academic Research Enhancement Award.” On Thursday, November 1, 2007, OSP delivered a workshop on applying for funding through this program.
The NIH AREA grant, also known as the R15, is a good funding mechanism for predominantly undergraduate institutions. It is specifically intended to support small research projects in the biomedical and behavioral sciences conducted by faculty and undergraduate researchers at institutions that have not been major recipients of NIH research grants. AREA would be of interest to most KSU faculty with biomedical or health related research interests.
The first half of the workshop was an overview of the program and how to apply. During the second half, two KSU faculty members who are recent AREA recipients shared their experiences and took questions from workshop participants.
Standard deadlines for this program are February 25, June 25, and October 25. OSP is considering running this workshop again in the spring, depending on the level faculty interest. OSP also has many articles and other resources available to help you apply to this program and will meet with individual faculty to discuss.
Applying for Grants in Business and Related Disciplines
On Tuesday, October 23, 2007 and Wednesday, November 14, 2007, OSP presented workshops for the Coles College of Business. Both workshops included an overview of the proposal development and submission process at KSU, as well as some highlights of funding opportunities appropriate for faculty in business disciplines. An annotated handout with notes on business related grant programs is available upon request; email Laura Letbetter, lletbett@kennesaw.edu.
NSF Workshop: Applying for Research Grants from the National Science Foundation
On Friday, November 16, 2007, OSP delivered a workshop on “applying unsolicited” to the National Science Foundation (NSF). NSF supports all non-medical fields of fundamental science, including economic and social sciences. All faculty whose research interests fall into this broad category were invited to attend.
This workshop was divided into two parts. Part I covered how to “apply unsolicited,” meaning how to submit your original research proposal to one of NSF’s core disciplinary programs. Part II covered how to apply under a particular funding mechanism called “Research at Undergraduate Institutions,” better known as the RUI program.
Part II built on Part I in some ways, but each part was also designed to work as a stand-alone workshop, so that faculty could attend one or both parts, depending on individual interests and schedules.
Deadlines for unsolicited proposals and RUI proposals vary among fields, but January and July (two per year) are typical.
OSP is also considering running this workshop again in the spring, depending on the level faculty interest. OSP staff can also meet with individual faculty to discuss.
