A Summary of the ADR Certificate Program

Required courses for this program total 25 quarter hours or 15 semester hours.  By wisely selecting elective courses, the ADR Certificate requirements can be incorporated into most degree programs.


COM 325 - Multicultural Communication (COM 3325)

A study of cultural and communication variables that impact the interaction processes between peoples.  Multiculturalism is examined during the time communication participants share ideas, information, persuasion and emotions.

COM 345 - Discussion Methods (COM 3345)

A study of input, process, and output variables in small group discussion.  Emphasis on participation, observation, and evaluation of various discussion methods.

BL 340 - Negotiation (BL 3340)

An examination of the theory and practice of negotiation.   In addition to reviewing readings, students will participate in simulations and discuss negotiations cases to broaden their negotiating techniques.

POLS 410 - American Legal System (POLS 4410)

Basic concepts of American law, judicial selection, the legal profession, court systems, criminal justice and judicial behavior.

POLS 490 - Mediation:  Alternative Methods (POLS 4430)

A survey of the theory and methods of alternative dispute resolution and conflict management, with simulation in facilitation, mediation and negotiation.  Basic skills will be taught.

POLS 490 - Practicum in ADR (POLS 4440)

A capstone course designed to meet requirements for the Alternative Dispute Resolution Certificate Program by integrating the student's prior training in alternative dispute resolution via on-site applied settings and an on-campus seminar.  Students will be given applied experiences in selected public or private organizations in the community or in campus-related programs to make use of their ADR training.
