Alternative Dispute Resolution Certificate Program
What is Alternative Dispute Resolution? | What can I do with ADR? | Summary of the ADR Program | How can I apply? | Center for Conflict Management

What is ADR?

Opinion1.gif (3109 bytes)Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) refers to procedures, other than litigation, that are used to settle disputes at the lowest possible level.  Using ADR saves time, reduces cost, and often preserves relationships that might otherwise be destroyed by a litigious process.

By using alternative methods, disputes often can be settled expeditiously and more favorably for all parties.  ADR offers the psychological equivalent of "having one's day in court," but eliminates the delays and expense associated with a court hearing.

Alternative Dispute Resolution includes the following list of procedures:

  • Negotiation
  • Arbitration
  • Mediation
  • Shuttle Diplomacy
  • Facilitation
