The Master’s of Conflict Management Program provided excellent training in the identification and resolution of conflict in organizations, international stages and between individuals. During my education at Kennesaw State University, I was presented with an overwhelmingly clear picture of the need for and myriad and challenging opportunities in the field of conflict resolution.

From this experience, I created my own business, Conflict Exploratorium, dedicated to teaching participants how to engage conflict skillfully. This program offers great ingredients for the future success of its students, practical instruction, excellent faculty and synergistic learning through participation in a cohort.

The training I received at Kennesaw State University’s Master of Science in Conflict Management Program has been priceless in the start-up of my career.  Before working in the field of conflict resolution, I chose to learn the underlying theories of the field’s practices.  Since the field is relatively young, I saw an opportunity to truly put my fingerprints on the field’s foundation.  I knew that before I could build onto the field, I had to first understand the field’s history; understanding where the field has been is just as important as visualizing where one wants to expand the field.

The MSCM Program not only offered me book knowledge, but also access to practitioners in the field.  None of the MSCM faculty members are “arm-chair” mediators; they are consistently working in the field and sharing their experiences with their students.  Because of that open-door policy incorporated throughout the program, I had the advantage of gaining practical knowledge as well as a solid, theory-based education.

After graduation, I began working with Justice & Sustainability Associates, LLC.  Justice & Sustainability Associates is a for-profit, conflict resolution and public participation consulting firm based in Washington, DC.  We are impartial mediators working within the field of land use and community development around the United States.

Through our work, we help clients to create economically smart, socially just, culturally competent, and environmentally sustainable communities.  Moreover, we use conflict resolution techniques within land use planning to transform civic culture.  When the JSA name is associated with a development project, project stakeholders know the public participation process will be fair; JSA’s role is to design and implement a process that involves recruiting participation from all the stakeholders and ensuring that every voice is heard.  JSA promises and delivers a transparent decision-making process.

As mentioned earlier, we are impartial mediators who design and implement impartial processes; nonetheless, we are not neutral.  We care about the outcomes of our processes in that we want the outcomes to be just and sustainable.  As many communities and organizations today find themselves subject to concepts such as white supremacy and patriarchy, JSA helps create and maintain a level decision-making playing field.

Linda,

My MSCM experience has served me well as a legal guardian for incapacitated adults who have had difficult and sometimes complex family living arrangements and estate issues. I have applied the theories and training now for seven years since my graduation and subsequent CEO position in a family‑owned business. The MSCM applied in the medical and legal industries, and their myriad ancillary components and challenges, has made the job of facilitating difficult decisions much more effective and well‑received by the clientele I serve. I recommend the MSCM to anyone with the desire to make a difference within themselves, in their homes and communities, and in their pursuit of professional recognition and excellence.

Best Regards,
Joseph D. Frazier
MSCM (1996 & 2001) President, KSU Alumni Association
