Audacity is a free, easy-to-use audio editor and recorder for Windows, Mac OS X, GNU/Linux, and other operating systems. Note: Audacity does not support the Mac G5 or Intel Mac. You can use Audacity to:

LAME is an educational tool to be used for learning about MP3 encoding. It's useful for when you are done editing your sound file in and you want to export it from Audacity to an .mp3 file. You can find out more about it and download it here.
Garageband is a Mac-Only application which is part of the iLife06 Suite of software. Audio, audio/video, and podcasts can be recorded and edited in Garageband. You can purchase it through the KSU Bookstore or the Apple Store website.

ProfCast is a Mac only application that creates 'enhanced podcasts' in the m4b format. These are audio files which contain chapter markers where you can include titles, images and web links. The images in these files can be viewed on an iPod with photo capabilities or video capabilities, through iTunes or even in QuickTime. You can download a trial version of Profcast here.

A podcast is made up of an RSS 2.0 (Really Simple Syndication) feed with a link to an MP3 file. An RSS feed is just a web page, set up in a specific way. That RSS feed web page has title and description information about the podcast channel and title, MP3 link, and description information about each specific podcast.
Your feed is a file that's updated every time you add a podcast. Subscribers to your feed can then automatically download your new content.
