Crime
Prevention on Campus
Crime Prevention is
an important function of the Kennesaw State University Department of Public
Safety. Kennesaw State University is a relatively crime free environment.
However, the university community should not feel that they are completely
safe and secure from crime while on campus. Incidents do occur that require
law enforcement attention. Therefore, the Department needs your
help in the prevention of crime. If you witness a crime in progress,
see suspicious persons or have an emergency, contact the Department of
Public Safety by calling ext. 6666 or 770-423-6666, or by coming to the
Office and reporting it to the dispatcher on duty. You can also
report incidents by using the red emergency phones located in all parking
lots and along many of the streets on campus.
The following
are some measures that could help prevent you from becoming a victim of
a crime:
IF YOU DRIVE
A CAR
- Drive with doors
locked and windows rolled up.
- Lock doors and
trunk when parking and take your key.
- Store valuables
in a locked trunk.
- Park in well-lit
areas.
- If possible, don't
drive alone. There is safety in numbers.
- Don't pick up hitchhikers.
- Check the interior
and underneath the car before getting in.
- If you see blue
lights behind you, do not pull over until you are in a well-lit, populated
area. The police officer will understand your concerns.
WHEN YOU ARE WALKING
- Don't walk alone.
- Use public walkways
and well-lit paths. Avoid shortcuts and dark, isolated spots.
- Women should dress
for freedom of movement and keep their purse tucked closely under their
arm.
- Look alert, have
your keys in your hand when walking to your car.
If you are being followed:
- Cross the street.
- Change direction.
- Keep looking back
so the person knows you can't be surprised.
- Go to a well-lit,
populated area.
- Remember as much
as you can about the person so you can give a good description.
WHEN YOU ARE ALONE
IN AN OFFICE OR CLASSROOM
- Keep the door locked.
- Always ask who
is knocking before opening the door.
- Never leave locked
exterior doors propped open.
