WHAT IS THE REGENTS’ TEST?

The Regents’ Test is a required examination in each institution of the University System of Georgia. It assesses the competency level in reading and writing of all students enrolled in undergraduate degree programs.

The Regents’ Exam consists of two sections, essay and reading, administered in that order. The essay section requires students write on one of the four essay topics provided. A passing score on the Regents’ essay is a 2 or a 3. The reading section consists of 10 passages with multiple-choice questions on elements such as word usage and reading comprehension. A passing score for the Regents’ reading is a 61.

WHO TAKES THE REGENTS’ TEST?

All regularly enrolled undergraduate students of Kennesaw State University must take and pass the test as a requirement for graduation.

WHEN TO TAKE THE REGENTS’ TEST

All freshmen are to take the Regents’ Test their first semester of enrollment. Registration will be during orientation. KSU may not delay initial testing beyond the student having earned 45 hours of degree credit.

Students with 45 hours of degree credit who have not tested or who have failed either part of the test are required to take the appropriate non-degree preparatory course(s) in reading and/or writing every semester until they have passed the test.

Transfers students must take the Regents’ Test by their second semester at KSU. If they failed to test, the student will be subject to all provisions of this policy.

Student whose native language is not English, must first attempt the regular Regents’ Test. If unsuccessful in passing the Regents’ Test, the student may then take the Regents’ Test designed for international students. After attempting the International Regents’ Test, the student must follow all policies and procedures regarding Regents’ testing.

Students with a documented disability should contact Student Development-Disable Student Support Services to be considered for extended time.

EXEMPTIONS

A student holding a baccalaureate or higher degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning will be exempt from the Regents’ Test.

Reading:
Students with a SAT Verbal score of 510 or higher or an ACT Reading score of 23 or higher will exempt the reading comprehension requirement of the Regents’ Test. Scores must be from a national administration of the SAT or ACT.

Essay
Students with College Board Advanced Placement (AP) English scores of at least 3, International Baccalaureate (IB) higher-level English scores of at least 4, or SAT Writing score of at least 560 will be exempt from the essay portion of the Regents’ Test. Students with a SAT Verbal score of 510 or higher and a score of 500 on the SAT Writing can exempt the essay portion of the Regents’ Test. Students who have an ACT score of at least 24 on the ACT Combined English/Writing Exam will exempt the essay portion. Students with a combined ACT Combined English/Writing score of 22 and an ACT Reading score of 23 also exempts the essay portion.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON THE TEST
Both parts of the test last about three hours. The essay section and the reading section are each one hour in length. About 30 minutes is set aside for preparation and form completion. The essay section requires students to write an essay on one of four topics provided. The reading section is a comprehension and vocabulary test made up of 10 passages followed by questions about each passage.

HOW TO REGISTER FOR THE TEST
Registration for the Regents; Test can be done through Owl Express, Registration and Student Records, and Regents’ Test Sign Up.

HOW TO GET THE TEST SCORES
The scores are returned 6-8 weeks after the test date. You can locate your scores by logging into Owl Express, Registration and Student Records, and Regents’ Test Scores.

REGENTS’ TEST TIPS
Registration for the Regents’ test is required. All candidates must register online.

Photo identification is required during the check in process.

Be on time. Doors will close promptly. No late admittance is allowed.

Bring pencils and if taking the essay portion, you will need black ink pens.(NEW RULE: Only BLACK pens are allowed for writing the essay).

English dictionaries are allowed during the last 15 minutes of the essay portion of the test.

No food or drinks allowed in the testing room.

No cell phones or other electronic equipment are allowed to be in use during the exam.
No breaks are allowed once the testing begins.

No children are allowed in the testing room.

No one can leave until the end of the testing period.

TESTING AT ANOTHER SCHOOL
If you are a student at KSU, but would like to test at another University System of Georgia school, please contact our CAPS department to have a request sent for permission to test. Requests to test at a different school must be processed prior to the first day of the testing period. Tests taken at a school other than a home institution without authorization may be voided.
