How to Calculate Your GPA

[Note: Kennesaw State University uses "grades," "quality points'' and "hours attempted" to calculate a student's GPA]

BEFORE you begin to calculate your GPA, you will need to know the following:

  • Grades: Grades used to calculate your GPA are As, Bs, Cs, Ds, Fs, and WFs (this is a "withdrawal failing" grade). [Does not include "S," "U," "W" (withdrawal), or "V" (audit) grades]

  • Quality Points: Quality points are values given to each grade that you earn at KSU. Each letter grade is worth the following:
    A = 4 quality points
    B = 3 quality points
    C = 2 quality points
    D = 1 quality point
    F = 0 quality points
    WF = 0 quality points
  • Hours Attempted: Hours of classes you have completed and earned a grade of A,B,C,D,F, or WF at KSU
    [Does not include: Learning Support Classes (i.e. English 0099, Math 0097 or 0098, Reading 0099), Regents' Classes (i.e. Reading 0020 or English 0020), or any class that you receive an "S," "U," "W," or "V" grade.]

  • The Formula: Quality points divided by hours attempted = your GPA

    This Formula can be used to compute all GPAs at KSU. Kennesaw State University computes the following grade point averages for each student:

    1. Term GPA - This calculation includes only the grades and quality points you earn in one term at KSU.
    2. Cumulative GPA - This calculation includes ALL grades and quality points you have earned at KSU.
    3. Adjusted GPA (AGPA) - This calculation is used when a student repeats a course. If a student makes a "D", "F", or "WF" in a course at KSU and retakes that same course at KSU and makes a "C" or higher, only the higher grade is computed in the adjusted GPA. Both grades are used in the student's cumulative GPA. (This rule only applies to undergraduate students.)

EXAMPLE
(How to calculate your Term GPA)

(Term GPA-This includes only the grades and quality points you earn in one term at KSU.)

Sue made these grades this term:

ART 1101 = B (3 credit hours)
MATH 1101 = A (3 credit hours)
POLS 1101 = C (3 credit hours)

To calculate Sue's Term GPA:

Step 1: Multiply credit hours by quality points for grade received:

ART 1101 "B" 3 hours (x) 3 quality points = 9 quality points
MATH 1101 "A" 3 hours (x) 4 quality points = 12 quality points
POLS 1101 "C" 3 hours (x) 2 quality points = 6 quality points

(Remember: Quality points are awarded as follows:)
A = 4 quality points
B = 3 quality points
C = 2 quality points
D = 1 quality point
F = 0 quality points
WF = 0 quality points

Step 2: Add quality points: 9 + 12 + 6 = 27 quality points

  Step 3: Add hours: 3 + 3 + 3 = 9 hours attempted

  Step 4: Now use the formula* to determine GPA:

[*Formula: Divide quality points by hours attempted = GPA]
27 divided by 9 = 3.00 Term GPA
(quality points)   (hours attempted)   (grade point average/GPA for the term)

WORKSHEET

Course Name: _________ hours: _______ (x) Qpts. For grade: _____ = ____ Qpts.

 Total Hours: _______     ____ Total Qpts.

Use Formula: Divide total quality points by total hours to calculate term GPA

Total "quality points" _____ divided by total "hours"_____ = term GPA_____

To calculate your KSU Cumulative GPA:
(This calculation includes ALL grades and quality points you have earned at KSU.)

(Note: In order to do this calculation, you must know your "Previous Total Quality Points" and your "Previous Total Hours" earned at KSU. This information can be obtained from your transcript.)

Step 1: Add "Previous Total Quality Points" __________ + (plus)
"Term Quality Points (from term above) __________ = (equals)
Total Cumulative Quality Points __________*

Step 2: Add "Previous Total Hours" __________ + (plus)
  "Term Hours (from term above) __________ = (equals)
  Total Cumulative Hours __________*

Final Step:

  Use Formula: Divide Total Cumulative Quality Points by Total Cumulative Hours to calculate Cumulative GPA

Total quality points*(From above)______divided by total hours**(From above)________=

Cumulative GPA _______

ADJUSTED GPA

Adjusted GPA (AGPA) - This calculation is used when a student repeats a course. If a student makes a "D," "F," or "WF" in a course at KSU and retakes that same course at KSU and makes a "C" or higher, only the higher grade is computed in the Adjusted GPA; whereas, both grades would be used in the student's Cumulative GPA.

The difficult part about this calculation is you have to adjust for any hours or quality points you may have already earned. Therefore, calculate your Cumulative GPA first and then adjust for the repeated class. Remember that the grade of "D" carries 1 quality point per hour of class.

Below are two examples that might help you in trying to determine your Adjusted GPA at KSU. The first example shows a student with a POLS 1101 class grade of "F" when taken for the first time and a "B" when repeated. The second example shows a student with a POLS 1101 class grade of "D" when taken for the first time and a "B" when repeated.

EXAMPLE #1: (with first grade of "F" and the repeat grade being a "B")

Sue made these grades during her first term at KSU:
MATH 1101 = A 3 hours (x) 4 quality points (for A) = 12
POLS 1101 = F 3 hours (x) 0 quality point (for F) = 0

Total Hours = 6     Total quality points = 12

Use the formula: Quality points divided by hours attempted = GPA
12 divided by 6 = 2.00 GPA for the Term
(quality points)   (hours attempted)   (term grade point average)

Sue made these grades during her next term at KSU:
ENGL 1101 = C 3 hours (x) 4 quality points (for C) = 6
POLS 1101 = B 3 hours (x) 3 quality point (for B) = 9

Total Hours = 6     Total quality points = 15

Use the formula: Quality points divided by hours attempted = GPA
15 divided by 6 = 2.50 GPA for the Term
(quality points)   (hours attempted)   (term grade point average)

First, determine the Cumulative GPA:
  Add quality points from both terms
  12 + 15 = 27

Add hours from both terms
  6 + 6 = 12

Use the formula: Total quality points divided by hours attempted = GPA
27 divided by 12 = 2.25
(total quality points)   (total hours)   (Cumulative GPA)

(Note: Both POLS 1101 classes are used in this calculation.)

Next, recalculate for your Adjusted GPA:
  Add quality points from both terms
  12 + 15 = 27

Add hours from both terms
  3 + 6 = 9

(Note: when you add your hours for both terms, only count the hours for POLS 1101 with grade of "B" as 3 hours. Do not include the 3 hours for the other POLS 1101"F" grade.)

Use the formula: Total quality points divided by hours attempted = GPA
27 divided by 9 = 3.00
(total quality points)   (total hours)   (Adjusted GPA)

(Note: Only one POLS 1101 class was used in this calculation - the one with the higher grade of "B".)

From this example, you can see the advantage of repeating classes and making a higher grade.

EXAMPLE #2: (with first grade of "D" and the repeat grade being a "B")

Sue made these grades during her first term at KSU:
MATH 1101 = A 3 hours (x) 4 quality points (for A) = 12
POLS 1101 = D 3 hours (x) 0 quality point (for D) = 3

Total Hours = 6     Total quality points = 15

Use the formula: Quality points divided by hours attempted = GPA
15 divided by 6 = 2.50 GPA for the Term
(quality points)   (hours attempted)   (term grade point average)

Sue made these grades during her next term at KSU:
ENGL 1101 = C 3 hours (x) 4 quality points (for C) = 6
POLS 1101 = B 3 hours (x) 3 quality point (for B) = 9

Total Hours = 6     Total quality points = 15

Use the formula: Quality points divided by hours attempted = GPA
15 divided by 6 = 2.50 GPA for the Term
(quality points)   (hours attempted)   (term grade point average)

First, determine the Cumulative GPA:
  Add quality points from both terms
  15 + 15 = 30

Add hours from both terms
  6 + 6 = 12

Use the formula: Total quality points divided by hours attempted = GPA
30 divided by 12 = 2.50
(total quality points)   (total hours)   (Cumulative GPA)

(Note: Both POLS 1101 classes are used in this calculation.)

Next, recalculate for your Adjusted GPA:
  Add quality points from both terms
  12 + 15 = 27

(Note: when you add your quality points for both terms, only count the quality points for the POLS 1101 "B" grade. Do not include the quality points for the other POLS 1101 "D" grade.)

Add hours from both terms
  3 + 6 = 9

(Note: when you add your hours for both terms, only count the hours for POLS 1101 with the "B" grade as 3 hours. Do not include the 3 hours from the other POLS 1101 "D" grade.)

Use the formula: Total quality points divided by hours attempted = GPA
27 divided by 9 = 3.00
(total quality points)   (total hours)   (Adjusted GPA)

(Note: Only one POLS 1101 class was used in this calculation - the one with the higher grade of "B".)

Once again, from this example, you can see the advantage of repeating classes and making a higher grade.

The adjusted GPA can be used for acceptance into various programs at KSU, for being admitted into certain academic societies, and for graduating with honors.
