GEOGRAPHY MINOR
As a discipline, geography borrows from many fields. It is
this cross-disciplinary nature that appeals to students studying
anthropology, business, economics, foreign languages, history,
international affairs, political science, sociology, etc. Several
upper-division specialty courses are offered including economic geography,
geographic
information systems (GIS), historical geography, political geography,
remote sensing, and urban geography. The program is designed to give
students an applied, spatial perspective when analyzing local, regional,
and global problems.
The contents of the minor reflect the wide variety of geography
sub-fields and thus each student may tailor his or her minor to their own
interest. For example, students interested in urban planning may
wish to take courses in geographic information systems and urban
geography. Those interested in management (e.g. commercial and
industrial location) may wish to take geographic information systems and
economic geography. Those interested in history may elect to take
historical geography, and those interested in economics and marketing may
elect to enroll in economic geography and/or urban geography.
This minor will give students the opportunity to obtain a geographic or
spatial perspective on a variety of issues. Students who understand
geography are capable of evaluating the complicated relationship between
human communities and the natural environment. Three of geography’s
major themes are human-environmental interaction, regions of the world,
and questions of location. Geographers analyze processes, systems,
and behaviors that have spatial expression. Students will learn to
apply their knowledge of patterns, distributions, allocations, and
circulations towards solving problems in their chosen field of endeavor,
be it in the public sector, private sector, or the academe.
