Student Positions
Fall 2008-Spring 2009
The Department of Geography and
Anthropology is seeking to hire two student assistants to work on a research
project directed by Dr. Patterson and Prof. Hoalst-Pullen.
Students applying for the position must be full time students (12 credit
hours/semester) and must not graduate before Spring 2009. Students will
work 10 hours per week per semester for two semesters (Fall 08 and Spring 09)
and will be paid at the student assistant rate of $7.50/hour. Student assistant
must attend an orientation session given by HR. Students are required to sign
up for GEOG 4100 for both semesters. These positions may not be used for an
internship (GEOG 3398), practicum (GEOG 4415) or directed study (GEOG 4400).
The research project is investigating the local
impacts of globalization on the forestry sector in Central Chile. All research
will be conducted at KSU, and students will not travel to Chile for this
project.
Position 1: Geospatial Student Assistant
Duties: The student will work on land cover
classification of remotely sensed imagery, change detection, accuracy
assessment, map production, poster presentations, and report generation. The
student will be expected to keep a weekly journal documenting his/her
work-related activities as well as attend bi-weekly project meetings.
Qualifications: The student will have completed GEOG
4410 and GEOG 4405, possess good oral and written communication skills, is
interested in environmental applications of remote sensing, is able to work independently
with minimal supervision, and is motivated to work hard and learn new
techniques and/or software programs, if warranted.
Position 2: Human Geography Student Assistant
Duties: The student will work on analyzing results
from a survey, data entry, possible translations (Spanish), report writing, and
poster presentations. The student will be expected to keep a weekly journal
documenting his/her work-related activities as well as attend bi-weekly project
meetings.
Qualifications: The student will have completed at
least 9 hours of upper division geography coursework (excluding any GIS-related
classes), possess good oral and written communication skills, is interested in
human-environment relations and/or contemporary Latin American geography, is
able to work independently with minimal supervision, and is motivated to work
hard. Proficiency in Spanish is desired, though not required.
