About Dr. Sutton
A Russian historian by training, Sutton earned his Ph.D. from Indiana University and his A.B. from Duke University. He received Fulbright fellowships to Germany in 1978-79 and to Japan in 2005. Sutton received the J.L. Loveless Award for Leadership in International Education in 1996 and the Georgia State University International Excellence Award in 2007. He has held research fellowships at Columbia University, the University of Illinois, the University of Wales-Swansea (U.K.), and the University of Kiel (Germany).
From 1998 to 2009, Rick served as Assistant Vice Chancellor for International Programs and Senior Advisor for Academic Affairs at the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia. He previously held academic affairs positions with the Iowa Board of Regents and the University of Wisconsin System Administration. He was the inaugural director of international education at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse from 1984 to 1995, where he was also a faculty member in foreign languages and international studies.
