Just imagine
what we can accomplish…
Don’t miss this unique
opportunity to learn how social change can be realized through
women’s leadership in sports. Kennesaw State University continues
its national leadership by hosting the only U.S. conference that is
included on the agenda of the United Nations’ International Year of
Sport and Physical Education. And you’re invited!
Hosted by Kennesaw
State University's Wellstar College of Health and Human Services in
association with the United States Olympic Committee (USOC), this
two-day conference is part of the
United Nations' International Year
of Sport and Physical Education (IYSPE 2005).
Recognizing sport's
unique capacity for fostering personal excellence and unifying a
populace in the spirit of play and cooperation, the Secretary
General of the United Nations, in his 2003 Report on Sport for
Development and Peace, made relevant recommendations on possible
ways to use the positive legacy of sport in achieving the
humanitarian aims of the UN's Millennium Development Goals. The UN
General Assembly declared 2005 the International Year of Sport and
Physical Education. IYSPE 2005 provides a unique opportunity to
focus the world's attention on the importance of sport in society.
Sport and physical education programs can be used as a means to
combat challenges such as HIV/AIDS, extreme poverty, and gender
inequality. This International Summit will address such topics as
promoting gender equity, empowering women, and developing global
partnerships related to education and sports.
Our privileged partner
in the United Nations system is one of the oldest UN agencies. The
International Labour Organization has an historical record of social
insertion through sports since 1922 and in the past three years has
conducted a number of successful trainings and projects in
developing countries to allow people to benefit socially and
economically from sport. KSU is a full partner in the ILO/Universitas
network of institutions of higher learning worldwide.
