Kennesaw State University recognizes that many emergencies and crises happen quickly with no notice and are over just as fast. Therefore, self preparation and reliance is paramount to surviving any incident.
The KSU Crisis Coordinator Program relies on individually trained Crisis Coordinators within the main buildings on and off campus. These personnel are trained, mostly in evacuation and sheltering in procedures, with many having received first aid and AED (Automatic External Difibulator) training. Personnel will assist you in providing direction and response in case of a crisis.
However, as previously stated, many crisis and emergency situations are over within minutes and you must rely on either your individual training or common sense.
If the Fire Alarms go off, evacuate to an area outside the building at a safe distance. Do not huddle around the main exit doors assuming its a false alarm.
If the Early Warning Sirens go off, shelter in your building and other information as to specific direction will be received either through the ConnectED Early Notification System (SMS texts, cell voice or email) or through the Computer PopUp screens.
Be prepared in your office by having a supply of water and some edible snacks in case of a prolonged sheltering in situation.
Always have your car keys and access badge readily handy in case evacuation results in a prolonged stay away from your work area. Also, ensure your medications are accessible and take them with you.
At home, most authorities suggest keeping at least a 3-day supply of water on hand in case of a disaster. The common definition of a 3-day supply is 3 gallons per person: half to drink and half to use for cooking and sanitation. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) even recommends drinking your half gallon every day during an emergency, regardless of thirst. In hot weather, or for special cases like pregnancy or illness, the CDC recommends drinking closer to a gallon per day.
Have enough dry food for 72 hours as many support and emergency functions may be taxed beyond capacity. The Canned Food Alliance recommends the
minimum amount of food is two cans of food per person, per day.
Refrigeration in an emergency will most likely be interrupted with those having self power generation sustaining this for as long as fuel is accessible or available.
