Thank you to everyone who participated in the 1st annual LGBTQ history exhibit at Kennesaw State University!
Please check back often for information about the October 2014 exhibit!
This October, doors will be springing up across campus. To celebrate LGBT History Month, GLBTIQ Student Retention Services will be partnering with students, organizations and departments to create a unique history exhibit. In an effort to "queer" the idea of a history exhibit, we will use doors as the structure of our exhibit.
GLBTIQ Student Retention Services will be using doors as symbol for what we can learn from our past; how our past has shaped our present and how knowing our past can shape our future.
Doors are symbolic of coming out and accepting one's self. The doors in the exhibit will aid to further develop KSU's GLBTIQ community, strengthen the sense community and encourage appreciation for those who came before and paved the way to where we are today.
In 1994, Rodney Wilson, a Missouri high school teacher, believed a month should be dedicated to the celebration and teaching of gay and lesbian history, and gathered other teachers and community leaders. They selected October because public schools are in session and existing traditions, such as Coming Out Day (October 11), occur that month.
The LGBT community is the only community worldwide that is not taught its history at home, in public schools or in religious institutions. LGBT History Month provides role models, builds community and makes the civil rights statement of our extraordinary national and international contributions
In order to successfully host this event, GLBTIQ Student Retention Services is requesting donations to sponsor the show. Donations are appreciated at all levels and with a donation of $100.00 or more, we will place a commemorative plaque on one of the doors in your honor. Sponsorships can be made individually or as a collaborative effort of an organization or department.
