CHAPTER 8

Safety

If you have seen American films, television shows or news reports, you may believe the U.S. has a great deal of serious and violent crime…. There is crime. You do have to be careful and take precautions to protect yourself and your belongings. Anytime you leave a door unlocked in a car or apartment, or leave your books and belongings unattended in the library, the Student Center or anywhere else, there is a chance someone may seize the opportunity to take your belongings.

GENERAL EMERGENCIES

911 is an emergency phone number which can be used for any type of emergency. Remember it is for emergency use only. An emergency could include health, crime and fire emergencies. A health emergency includes cases such as severe pain or bleeding, unconsciousness, or when someone is in danger of dying. If you call 911 for an emergency, here are some guidelines for getting emergency help without delay.

  1. Promptly state your location, with major cross streets if possible, and your phone number in case the response team needs to call back.
  2. Describe the situation clearly in five words or less: say "the house is on fire," or "my baby isn't breathing."
  3. Stay on the line to listen to any first-aid instructions or receive other advice from the trained medical dispatchers.
  4. Remain calm in order to respond clearly to directions and questions from the dispatcher.

Emergency numbers can be found in the inside front cover of most telephone directories.

THE POLICE

The police are expected to both enforce the law and assist the public. It is always appropriate to ask the police to help with all kinds of matters such as lost or stolen property, noisy neighbors, and emergency situations.

Police are legally prohibited from taking "gifts" or money. They may arrest people who attempt to offer such payment.

Typically, international students arrive in the United States with concerns about safety. Movies and television, particularly news reports, make the United States appear to be even more violent than it is. If you are careful and take some necessary precautions your stay should be crime free.

ON-CAMPUS SECURITY

The Kennesaw State University Police Department has 2 locations - on the south side of the Pilcher Building and the trailer/portable building beside the Nursing Building. The officers are on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The officers are highly trained and are always willing to help. To report a crime call (770) 423-6206. In the event of an emergency, call (770) 423-6666.

ESCORT SERVICE

There are emergency call boxes, telephones with blue strobe lights, located throughout the campus and parking lots that connect you directly with public safety. The OISRS recommends that all students leaving KSU alone and after dark utilize the KSU safety escort service which is available during evening hours. Call (770) 423-6206 to request a police escort to a parking lot or public transportation location. When you call, a KSU escort in uniform will come to you and then take you to your car. The escort service is a valuable assistance program, particularly for students, faculty, and staff leaving the school alone and late at night.

SEXUAL HARRASSMENT

Simply stated, sexual harassment is unwanted, unsolicited, or undesired attention of a sexual nature. Sexual harassment is illegal, and the Kennesaw State University policy prohibits any university employee or student from engaging in sexual harassment. If you are confronted, remember to object strongly, say "No" clearly and directly without smiling. Keep a record of any incident as carefully and detailed as possible. Report the behavior to the campus security or the judiciary coordinator.

VERBAL HARRASSMENT MAY INCLUDE:

  • sexual innuendoes, comments and remarks about clothing, body or activities
  • suggestive or insulting sounds or whistling
  • humor or jokes about sex or gender
  • sexual propositions, invitations, or other pressure for sex
  • implied or overt threats

PHYSICAL HARRASSMENT MAY INCLUDE:

  • unwanted touching, such as patting, pinching, hugging or brushing against
