Go early in the day to
beat the crowds. They can usually serve everyone who arrives before 3:00PM.
If you have an interview, arrive at least fifteen minutes early.

Before going downtown,
check with the international counselor in the Admissions Office or the F-1 Advisor
in the Institute for Global Initiatives. They may be able to save you a trip.
MAINTAINING STATUS
WITH IMMIGRATION
- Register
for a full load of courses.
- 12
semester hours for undergraduates (minimum course load)
- 9
semester hours for graduate students.
- F-1 students are allowed ONE (1) opportunity to drop down
to six (6) course credit hour semester
- Know
the date when you are to complete your program of study (limit of stay on
your I-20 or IAP-66). Apply for an extension 60 days in advance if you are
not going to complete your studies by the date stated on your I-20. Make an
appointment with an F-1 advisor to apply for an extension.
- Before
leaving the country, always have your passport and visa checked and your
I-20 or IAP-66 signed.
- If
you are transferring from another academic institution in the U.S., make
an appointment with the F-1 Advisor to complete this procedure.
- Know
when your passport expires. File for renewal with your embassy two to three
months in advance of the passport's expiration date.
- Do
not work off-campus without written employment authorization (a work permit)
from the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services. See your F-1
Advisor to apply for permission.
- Make
copies of all important documents and keep on file with the F-1 Advisor and
the Admissions office.
- Make
copies of all important documents and checks for your file before mailing
the originals.
- Complete
and submit the appropriate forms if you move.
