CHAPTER 14

Kennesaw, Georgia

North of Marietta and its namesake, Kennesaw Mountain, in Cobb County is the city of Kennesaw, Georgia. It has a population of more than 16,000. Acworth, Austell and Powder Springs are smaller cities in the western half of Cobb. Nestled in northwest metro Atlanta, Cobb County is bisected by Interstate 75 and Highway 41/Cobb Parkway. Atlanta's Perimeter highway 285 and the Chattahoochee River are the east border. Interstate 20 is the border on the south.

Cobb County is a community of both long timers and newcomers. The Cumberland Mall/Cobb Galleria Center area contains slightly more office space than Atlanta's central business district. Lockheed Martin, where 10,000 people construct aircrafts and equipment, is a mainstay of Cobb's economy. It began business as the Bell Bomber plant in 1940.

The county seat of Marietta, Cobb's largest municipality with more than 47,000 residents, temporarily housed General Sherman when he stormed Kennesaw Mountain and burned Atlanta during the Civil War.

Cobb's median income is among the metro area's highest at 49,840. The citizens of Cobb enjoy museums, art centers the Marietta Cobb Museum of Art, a symphony, libraries, more than a dozen golf courses and parks. Theater in the Square in Marietta has produced Broadway class shows throughout its fifteen-year history.
