CHAPTER 31

Georgia Official State Symbols

In the United States, it is common for the legislature in each state to designate official symbols for that state. The symbols are usually chosen because they are common to, or native to, the state and because they enhance the state's image.

Georgia has designated over 40 official state symbols, including the state flag, bird, tree, insect, seashell, and vegetable. You can find a comprehensive listing of the state symbols on the website of the Secretary of State, Cathy Cox. The listing includes photographs, descriptions, the date they were officially designated, historical information and, in some cases, sound effects!
